What fridge?

I’m getting gradually set up with gear as I look for a steady permission. So far I’ve only brought back one whole carcass (a muntjac). Otherwise it’s either gone to the game dealer or I’ve just taken skin on joints from the field.

So I’m getting a fridge for the garage. I’m assuming a standard tall fridge (180 cm or more) will do, as long as I can fit a sturdy bar near the top. But I see some people going for old drinks chillers instead - which seem to cost a lot more, but look to me no better than a fridge? Any tips and advice on where to start? I’m looking at second hand stuff that’s goes for £50 or so.

Cheers.

If you get a second hand tall larder fridge a lot of higher cost ones do have built in airflow down the back spine inside. I bought a Samsung off EBay had been £2K new few marks on it but got it for £180 it has built in airflow

My larder fridge has a fan and cost me £40 off fb market place plus a £8 curtain rail. As I was worried about the weight I drilled all the way through one side and half out the other then filled. But I probably couldn’t just relied on the screws of the curtain rail to do the job.

Does a tall regular larder fridge not have sufficient ventilation for hanging a deer?

That sounds like what I’ve been looking at. So that will work for a couple of muntjac or a roe? That’s about all I would be able to manage myself at any one time anyway.

I’ve seen a decent Samsung on eBay, but not sure whether it has anything special on the ventilation side.

Yep, I’ve had 3 MJ in it. No problem.

You can probably pick up an old drinks fridge for free, if you're prepared to take it away, and you don't mind the words "coca-cola" emblazoned across the top. Just look out for any small convenience store, corner shop or garage that's undergoing refurbishment.

It’s fine, you don’t need ventilation. A fan inside to move air internally is a good thing but fridges strip moisture so opening the door just lets in warm, moist air. You can get usb powered fans for a few quid on amazon so one of those would work fine if there isn’t an internal fan.

Ideally hang it to cool before chucking it in and don’t overload it and you’ll be fine

Look in the photos with the door open there will be a “ vent” spine that sticks out from the rear wall of the fridge and normally led lights on the rib as well

I bid for a tall fridge locally that the seller declared would leave a puddle under sometimes. It never has for me because I only run it for a few days at a time. It was only 18 months old. I won it for £1! When I suggested that I should pay him a bit more he said that he was going to have to pay £65 to have it taken away so was very happy with £1.

I’ve bought a tall larder fridge 185cm (a decent Samsung) with what seems to be venting down the middle back. I’m not planning on drilling through either the sides or the top but just putting a flat bar on the top runner. It’s a charity shop job for a few quid - but oddly comes with a 6 month warrantee from the charity! I’d have no issues with this as my home fridge, but it’s going into the garage and will hopefully have some deer in it next week. Next job a small chest freezer to go with it!

I'm looking to buy the following fridge on FB market place.

Before I do so, presumably this will be good enough for munty/roe and has a built in fan therefore no ventilation issues.

Anything else i should be aware of?

I have used a second hand tall lardr fridge for 7 years, no fan, no issues. I just drilled through the sides and fitted a bit of crome bar.

Its worth doing s seach for commerial auction specalists as the frequently have auctions of catering equipment, with can include both drinks frudges and tall larder fridges

I've used the same tall fridge for ten years now. I bought it for £50 (delivered!) from a High Street charity shop.

Rather than take the risk of drilling through it, I simply epoxied two plastic castor cups:

- onto opposite internal walls, having first cut out a section of the "wall" of the cup to allow insertion of a bar.

A suitable length of steel curtain rail provides the suspension bar.

It's held up to three small deer simultaneously.

Very interesting discussion going on here. I use a fridge as a chiller for sambar legs. It lives on the open back verandah. Bought it second hand 40 odd years ago and it is till going strong. I just stand the legs upside down - skin on - sitting on a wire rack so that the venison isn't sitting in decaying fluid. I found that wiping this fluid out at night also expels old tainted air.

I Use a beko larder fridge
£5 off marketplace
Made some timber support for a galvanised rail by drilling out with hole saw. Then glossed and siliconed resting on the existing shelf support. Has held 80kgs.
Open the door every day or so instead of a fan
I have taken to putting a thick piece cutting board between the carcass and back wall to avoid freezing.
I would prefer a drinks fridge if I found one for free!
