What Rifle in 25-06

had a 25-06 in a ruger no1 varmint
Lovely rifle and very accurate although not sure the falling block design is right for stalking

I have shot a T3 25-06 for about 7 years now and it has never let me down, it only has a 22 1/2" barrel and shoots just as well as any other of the longer barreled rifles, just ask any of the red deer shot what they thought, if would have prefered a longer barrel??????

With a 22 1/2" barrel you might as well save powder and have it chambered is .257 Roberts. The whole point of the 25-06 surely is to get the velocity to help reach out there.

But as I said before what the heck it's not my money ;).

Hi, it reaches as far as i need it to, but i see where you are coming from. I think the yanks done/do alot of varmint shooting with the 2506.

north dorset says it all really i have the same but moderated with a northstar mod and i love it when i go to the cabinet its the 2506 that comes with me most now 100 gr nosler b t s will stop anything i want at 250 plus past that the cross hairs of my 8x56 smidt blanks it out any way 2506 just go out and get one youll love it atb stu

I have a Tikka which has had a lot of use and still shoots any ammo I put through it great,1 inch group or better. It is the old model,595 or 695 I can never remember which.

Cz 550 action - mega moddied custom thumbhole stock, 22 7/8" after market barrel, 1 in 10 twist, 7x50 Zeiss ilum, - 87 - 120 gr, I've had no problem grouping <17 mm with 85 gr Fed @ 500 - thats hand - not factory loads!

In resposnse to your Question - win balistic tip are a very nice round - recoil and impact wise. - I wish I had another 1000+ of them in the attic, failing those the 100 gr fedral are alright too - was getting circa 28 - 35mm @ 500 from store bought. If your interested in benchrest a tad lower - pm if ou want 600 loads.

This is a pretty silly way of looking at things. Even if someone else has had good results with the Winchesters in their rifle, this by no means says they will shoot in the rifle you buy, even if you bought the exact same rifle built on the same day.

Look around for a rifle, then worry about ammo.

Actually, this is a very sensible way of doing things. You work out what you want to shoot with your rifle, theen what bullet and cartridge will work best, and then finally you work out which rifle will do the best job with that particular bullet and cartridge. I nearly always start off with a particular bullet and work backwards. A lot of very experienced hunters do this, and nrealy all target shooters start with a bullet and build the gun around it. If i choose a rifle around the bullet i want to shoot, i have found that the rifle will always shoot it well. You just have to put the right amount of powder behind it.

And yes a short barreled 25-06 is quite possibly the stupidest thing i have ever heard of. Have a look at some ballistic tables and bullets and bullets - especially their ballistic coefficients. The 260 Rem is able to do exactly the same as the 25-06. Except that the 260 Rem can do it in a short action. Now no matter how you cut it, a short action is a better choice than a short barrel. Especially at 3000fps. A short action will be an inch shorter to begin with, but as a general rule, they are also about half a pound lighter. So you would need to cut several inches off your 25-06 to get it to match the 260 Rem in a short action. And give up a couple of hundred fps and suffer terrible muzzle blast. And completely defeat the purpose of having a 25-06 in the first place. If you want a shorter 25-06, get a ruger n.o. 1 (they are about 5" shorter than most long action bolts), or just get a 260 Rem.

Always try to cut the action before the barrel. You dont loose anything by cutting the action.

Most of the short barrel talk, as Brithunter suggests, is just marketing.

If you are talking about a custom rifle and hand loads, then yes, the approach does work. However deciding on a particular factory load to then find a rifle that will shoot it is not a great idea. Especially with crap ammo like Winchester. The only exceptions here would be a .308 using Federal Gold Medal Match ammo, or a Palma/target rifle where they must use host country supplied ammunition.
