You could have said the wood was rubbish the barrel bent and it doesn't shoot for ****
Im not used to coming second :D But you beat me to to her first so enjoy :tiphat:

As for the old wazzock he's a good guy really pity he lives so far away

regards pete

You've not come second Pete If I had know you were after it before I paid you could have had it pal, it wont get much use I suppose now iv called your mate an older wassock !! he had invited me down for a munty suppose that offers gone up in smoke now !!!

If it is a joy to shoot, why spoil it? If you only shoot the rifle for pleasure as a recreational stalker, then why add a can?
Very nice rifle BTW!

I would leave it as it is. Stunning to look at and from you say shoots well so why change it. It looks like you had a very good buy there.

have it threaded and buy a hardy can for stalking (it's the least likely of the cans to upset the balance) importantly though get an invisible thread cap made so you can keep the rifles lovely lines and use without the can if you want?

i use a 270 unmoded i was going to get it screw cut and canned but i just could not wreck the original hunting rifle...

i use cotton wool in my ears that way i can still hear everything but it softens the blow the your ears...

this is the worst advice I've seen in a long time , cotton wool ? FFS!!!!

i have proper made rubber fitted ear plugs and also electronic ear defenders... cotton wool is MY personal choice to use as i can still hear all around me and bullet strike...

who said is was advice read before opening you trap.... ffs lol

This is what I'd do or just leave it as a thing of beauty for all to envy & buy some good sticks.
How about getting it screwcut for a mod and an invisible thread protector made at the same time. That way you can change between mod and no mod to suit your mood!

well hopefully the op will be bright enough to realise that using cotton wool as ear defenders is monumentally daft and will ignore your suggestion but ultimately it's your hearing ?

I wonder what age you are out of interest because most of the older stalkers I know are desparately trying to save what hearing they have left thanks to a cavalier attitude towards hearing protection in there youth!

and in hindsight (if only) I would have taken greater care of my hearing in the past..........................

once again not a suggestion!!

but my personal method i bet there is a lot of things you do that others dont.

i respect what you say about "proper" defenders as hearing is important. i put the bigger ones on when im taking multiple shots on the range..but i don't want to sit there all evening with big lumps over my ears or rubber in them blocking the world out.. at times movement is key to get on a deer and the less the better when face to face with a roe....i can keep the buds in all the time im out as i never know when im going to take a shot it works fine FOR ME..

Disclaimer - this is what I'd do:
1. Get it cut, and have an invisible thread-protector made, by a competent person. Then you can mod if you want/need, or not bother and suffer no aesthetic loss.
2. 6x42 is a good size for stalking and Zeiss is a good make - I'd keep the 'scope.
3. No idea what the mounts are. My choice would be a pair of Optilock combined ring/base mounts, which are robust, very low and elegant. If the mounts currently on it are also robust, very low and elegant then I'd leave them alone too.

and not do:
1. put cotton wool in my ears in the hope that it would in any way mitigate against the hearing damage caused by exposure to rifleshots: because it won't.

From what you say I'd probably recommend you to think about something like these
Hearing Protection Shooting Ear Plugs from CENS - Ear Defenders
theyre a lot more expensive than cotton wool but would probably be as comfortable for you to use, and a lot more effective at preventing lasting serious damage to your hearing.

your posting on a public forum which is read by anyone including newcomers to the sport , so I stand by my statement that advocating (which you are by saying its what you do) cotton wool as ear defenders is stupid.

there is many ways to protect your hearing , personally I would not shoot any of my rifles without either proper hearing protection or a moderator but I've already damaged the hearing in my left ear by a combination of work and shooting, once it's damaged it's damaged for good.

It is your hearing (and you will miss it when it's gone !)

turn your hearing aid up ......

you say your deaf in the one ear ... you should have used cotton wool...you would still be able to hear :old: lol

anyway don't want to fall out i finish at 3 and im going after three roe that have been seen everyday this week so fingers crossed....

that's what i'm saying , you'll be deaf if you don't use PROPER hearing protection!

good luck , once I get this fecking crane boom stripped i'm picking up the family and heading to Norfolk then out early to see what I can catch up with before the season closes !
