Which 6MM hunting cartridge?

Thank you all for the input. Lots to think about and research. It looks like picking a 6mm is like choosing from a box of chocolates, theres so many! I shot another roe this eve with the 6.5 prc and it has compounded my need for a smaller and slower round for <100yrds. I guess I’ll just see what reamers are available from smiths that will make Blaser barrels, or go for the 6xc. Or get a Kipplauf perhaps. Or a get a custom rifle made. I’m still very undecided!
If you want a Kipplauf break action in a 6mm then of course proper option is the 6x70R.

Have a read of for more information

A lot of people recommending a .243 with faster twist barrels but no one actually saying what rifles these are!
I think I've only seen Tikka/Sako do a 1:8 twist for their .243. Anyone know of any others that are a little more budget-friendly?

Why has no one mentioned probably the best 6mm of them all 6mm Remington.
because its pretty much disappeared because it was not in the favoured twist rate for deer and small varmints and the 243 was . That said with the 243 twist it likely was the better beast . Today if i was looking for a 6mm i might very well be choosing between a fast twist 243 or a 6mm creed which would be a fast twist from the box.

Weatherby are doing 1/7.5 in the 307 and the Mk5 as well I think

Thanks for the heads-up on the Weatherby.
It is indeed a 1:7.5 but they don't do a heavy/varmint barrel. I've been put off sporter profiles heating up.

If funds wasnt an issue, i was willing to reload for it, and i could have a gun smith build the chamber on the large side with lots of throat and put in a barrel with a low twist rate, a 6mm remington.

if i had to buy one on todays market likely a 6mm creedmore. It might even turn out to be the caliber the creedmore case is the most suited for, really, and ta 6mm CM rifle likely has the right twist rate too, to accomodate the longer and heavier for caliber options.

My advice is decide what kind of rifle you want first. You mention XC and Dasher and shooting long range targets which makes me think of a bench gun, but you also mention shooting small deer at short ranges which is altogether different. Guess what I'm saying is start with the rifle. Do you want something ultra handy and portable for hunting in the forest? Then I'd go with a mini action of some sort (Howa, CZ, etc.) and put on a barrel in something like 6 ARC or the like. I don't see the point in hammering tiny deer close in with rifles and cartridges meant to shoot targets at 1000 yards.

Not sure if you were joking about a Kipplauf but if money is no concern that would be awesome for hunting. Then you'd probably want a rimmed cartridge.

I have CZ 527 in 7x62x39. It's a ton of fun. I plink with it and hunt whitetails in dense woods. Super short and light, and a joy to carry around. Something like that in a 6 arc would be hard to beat IMO. After I finish the upgrades on my current rifle project, my next will likely be to build a Howa mini in 6 arc with a 16" barrel and overall length of under 40" suppressed (for the exact kind of hunting you are talking about...small/medium deer close in). Curious to see what direction you go in.
