Have you googled folding gambrel ?

@sh1kar - could this be the one I saw on the back of @Stalker62's Land Rover in a picture and it was a gift to him that he didn't know where it came from :-| Not sure it was folding though, although it was a thing of beauty 🤗

Back to the OP - I bought one of these a while back to stop the Monarch/Dodington gambrel from collapsing on me whilst trying to lift a carcass - this is a quite good bit of kit :thumb: Then I followed a trick from someone else on here and removed the ring from the folding gambrel and fitted a shackle - damm good idea 👏

I have the Doningtin folding one which has nipped me a few times so a mate put a ring on it which slides up and holds the thing together. Much improved. Why it was never designed with a pin or small magnet to hold the bits tight us a mystery to me.

Had the Donnington hand trap, it rattled and clattered so ended up keeping it wrapped in rope. Collapsed every time you didn't want it to and elicited the very worst language that I am capable of. And that is going some. Lost it (about 5 mins before I would have tossed it in the bin) and bought a Breckland Barns gambrel. I almost bought a second one after the first outing. Just cracking design and finish. no rattling or clanking, it is light, slides nicely into the bag or a pocket and is a really valued piece of kit. Jealously guarded now!

Can I ask why you removed the ring and fitted a shackle instead?

Exactly as I advised above - from collapsing on me whilst trying to lift a carcass.

The natural reaction to lifting an animal suspended using this gambrel is to lift under the ring/hook. If you do this with any non-perpendicular force the gambrel will collapse on you, at best dropping the carcass on the floor, at worst trapping your hand or parts of it. I think you will find that I'm not alone in experiencing this in use. On a light roe/muntjac it is possible to lift the carcass down quite easily by holding a leg with one hand whilst you unhook/release the ring with the other. If you have a lump of a fallow on one, that's simply not possible. The Donnington gambrel (with shackle mod - I think it was @triggertrix or @nun_hunter who originally suggested the mod) is now relegated to my car-based gralloch kit and by preference I use either the Breckland (lower) or the larger (unnamed middle) one.

Ah apologies, I thought you were saying you fitted a shackle to the Breckland Barns gambrel
