Who, (and how) would impose any penalty for shooting out of season deer?

Business man from west yorks got caught 2 or 3 years ago taking half a dozen out of season deer and had problems with the rifle both him and his pal. The deer was shot on his own land up Scotland. Money talks as I would have had my license revoked they just got fines. African Jack knows the said stalkers.

Accidental shooting of wrong sex deer will take place, policing will never happen, shooting out of season, a fallow pricket for the pot, who will ever know and what harm has been done. If you are stupid enough to get caught, then you should have your license revoked, not for shooting the deer but for being stupid.

Quite right Taff, although those with a reasonable degree of brain functioning will be able to successfully differentiate between the advantages of acquiring a dead deer out of season with the disadvantages of being caught, however remote the possibility. I doubt there are many inhabitants of this sceptered isle that have to take a deer for food to survive.

Added to that, I've yet to see or work a farm where deer arn't causing crop damage and can therefore, justifiably, be shot out of season every month of the year.

There may not be many who need the food to survive, but taking a male deer out of season if you want venison in your freezer, in my book is ok, after all the male season is only there for trophy hunters.

Well I suppose if the thread is going to morph into the morality of the situation...

I could play devils advocate and say that if you take a pricket out of season it means that is one less that your season-law-abiding neighbouring stalkers have a chance to get. If your patch borders onto three or four others' ground and they do the same, that is potentially a lot of deer you will not have a chance to take in the due season. If one does it then we all must do it to protect our interests...or...we agree a set of rules (seasons) and abide by them.

Regarding shortshot's snitching comment....I have been thinking about this and wondering at what point snitching becomes whistle blowing. "for evil to succeed it just needs good men to do nothing"...

Where do you draw the line...do you bury your head in the sand if you see somebody breaking a law? Or only if it is a law you consider imposed unecessarily as Taff describes above.

When does it become your own business?

Parking on pavements, cycling on pavements, littering, cash in hand, massaging expenses claims, shop lifting, cruelty to cats, cruelty to dogs, wife bullying, wife beating...

Can of worms?

sorry but I think there is some confusion between deliberately targetting a deer for culling due to circumstances

and

Taking a few extra bucks/stags in doe/hind season because they are there.

the commercial gain from out of season shooting is the bigger distinction still

Stalk long enough and you will HAVE to take a deer out of season due to all manner of scenarios, or you may genuinely shoot an androgynous, hermaphrodite or antlered female.

That is not the same as choosing to extend your stag season because you feel like it

The initial reason for the thread was to find out /discuss how, and to what extent, the seasons were actually policed and policeable. And to that end I had in mind a scenario where there were no extenuating circumstances such as injury or crop damage...if anything it was hypothetically based along the lines of your extending the "stag season because you feel like it"
