Who uses a fixed scope

Stalking the other evening with a colleague using a Swaro DS 5-25x52 which ran out of light with a couple of sika out in a field. 15 minutes later I shot one of the prickets and could have taken a second a few minutes later with my non-illuminated Swaro 8x50.

Interesting. They say that the Z4i 3-12x50 had the best light transmission of any Swaro zzom scope

Interesting indeed - why this one rather than the z4i 2.5-10×56? (which I'm hoping one will come up soon - still using my s&b 8×56 for now though:))

Dry powder

what type of scope is that? looks like hensoldt zf 500/800 but all of them are in 10x42, this one is 6x42, mil-dot, 1" tube.

Hi Richard, looked it up and I think they mean the Z4 range not specifically the 3-12 so the x56 should be pretty good

Only ever use a fixed 7x50 for stalking.

Variable mag is a pain the the hoop when out on deer. Total waste of time.

Just broken my Meopta and am looking for a new fixed to replace it. Won`t even consider a zoom scope.

8x56 S&B on my 223 and a 10x42 S&B on my 243. Only reason the 8x is on the 223 is the thicker reticule is better for lamping

I bet there’s many more people use variable scopes than fixed power for deer stalking!

I have 8, 10 and 12 power fixed scopes and have used all for woodlad stalking.
Now, I think my variable even on 2 power (Quality scope) is better than any of my fixed ones in the woods.
Ken.
PS. I think top quality glass at low power is superior to cheaper scopes with more mag.

I imagine there are more on variable, but god knows why.

What makes your variable better for woodland ?

And yes, better glass will always win out. Regardless of what mag.

Considerably less than 8X is easier for my eyes to track muntjac when they are moving around in cover.
More than once I’ve watched muntjac through binoculars in cover, then put the rifle up and can’t locate them.
That’s why my variable i better for me in woodland. Plus, i can leave it on 8 if i want.
If i want to lower the mag on my fixed scopes, i have to mount them ass backwards. :suss:

thats why I use 6X42 for stalking

8x56 S&B on my 7x57 for the past 21 years. Used for everything, crows, foxes, mink, roe and red. Miss some, hit most but would be no different with a variable.
Know plenty other lads who are using variables and others who are using fixed none of us hit everything we go for and I'm sure the misses will not be the fault of only the scope

In other words...each to his own.
