Why should I not get a 204 ruger

Dont get a .204

Why on earth do you want a rifle that has no recoil to speak of , is cheap to reload , is devastating on anything up to fox size out to 350m , is flat shooting and hard hitting .

Dont do it
Hi there is not such a thing as a flat shooting rifle ,the 204 drops nearly 6inches at 300yds the wind drift is about 26 inches at 350yds so if you cant read less than a 1mph wind the fox is is gut shot at best or missed

Ok just to throw a spanner in the works. Can you approach 204 speeds and accuracy out of a 223 with a 1:12 twist shooting 40gr vmax?
or us the 20 cal inherently better at controlling lighter bullets?

Hi mate if you are serious about shooting at ranges around 300yds no calibre is flat to that range ,the main factor is the wind do your homework look at some ballistic charts and check out wind drift

I have looked and if I can get a 40gr 223 travelling at 3800 the wind drift is twice that of a 39gr 204 travelling at 3600, that's using Shooter Calculator the drift at 300yards for a 10mph side wind is 10" for 223 and 5" for 204. As you say this is a learning curve and the more you shoot out to that range the more you will be able to judge holdover and wind age. It's a case of practicing on paper before shooting real animals. This is something I have always done with all my firearms.
my dilemma is now that I have gone full circle, should I buy another 223 and set it up for daytime shooting OR get a 204. Is the extra cost of brass, set etc. worth the benefit of the 204 over the 223 or the 20 practical. This probably the nub of the question.

What wind value moves a 204 bullet 26 inches at 350 yards ?

Great, that makes sense.

Can an you re-run those numbers for a 40gr 224" bullet at the same MV and a 26mph cross wind?

Should be interesting.

I have looked and if I can get a 40gr 223 travelling at 3800 the wind drift is twice that of a 39gr 204 travelling at 3600, that's using Shooter Calculator the drift at 300yards for a 10mph side wind is 10" for 223 and 5" for 204.

Don't know about your calculator, but with those figures and at sea level JBM gives:

http://jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj_simp-5.1.cgi

- 9.8" drift for 20cal 39gr Blitzking
- 13.1" drift for 22cal 40gr Blitzking

and for boattail 22cal 40gr, so you're not comparing apples to oranges:

- 10.9" drift for 22cal 40gr Ballistic Tip

For the record, I get 1100m/s / 3600fps for 40gr 223 Rem at 20" barrel length, and this is using softer CCI primers (I run hotter loads with other bullets and BR primers). So 3800fps should be doable given a longer barrel.

Thanks for that my 223 has a 25.5" barrel so should be able to get good velocity with a 40gr 224 bullet.

running my second 20 cal and love it,

just about to set it up for full time nv and cant wait,

so please don't purchase a 204 as said before you will be buying bullets that should be left on the shelf for me, primers are fairly ok on stocks and I have loads of RL10X

so leave the 39/40 gr bullets alone please.

PS: what is wind drift ? and my 20 cal does not shoot flat either.

bob.

True. I get only 3900 from mine. As you can imagine, I feel well and truly swindled!
What powder, and have you ever run it through quick load to get an idea of pressure.Mine was a 26" barrel and at 3800 had serious pressure signs.Like I said 4000 bumf!

erm well i'm bravely going against the trend.my findings with 2 .204 rifles were if your trying to shoot lr it still hates the wind .in order to shoot lr you need good accuracy but i had to slow both mine down to get decent accuracy.i much prefered a fast twist 223 or even better still a 6 br .any one can dial in your drop for a slower round but for me wind drift was the killer of the .204.

Thanks triggersqueezer that is interesting because one of the claims of the 20 cal is that it bucks the wind more than the 22 cal.

My drift and drop at 350 using the 5mm 40 grain V-Max at 3600 were approximately 9.5 and 9.5 (10 mph at 9 o'clock) Made my hold off's easy when shooting prairedogs.~Muir
