Wild boar press release

I've just had an email on the subject from Dr Martin Goulding who runs the British Wild Boar website and is probably the leading expert on boar in the UK. He resigned from DEFRA some years ago.

He thinks that the announcement was rushed out, possibly in response to MP pressure over the recent Ruardean incident.

He shares the general feeling of this forum about the DEFRA announcement being a cop out but he believes that this gives the Forestry Commission carte blanche to get stuck in and he thinks that they will have a serious go at the boar in the Dean and surrounding areas as it's mostly FC ground.

Paul I think you (or Martin) have hit the nail right on the head, it is a cop out by DEFRA the boar need a close season and a minimum calibre not just a recommendation not backed up by any laws. I have heard too many stories of boar been shot with .222's and shotguns (you never get to here about the ones that were only wounded).
I think this will give the FC a free hand but those half tame boar seen on Bill Oddies Autumn watch will soon turn into the crafty little buggers we hunt after a bit of pressure, and this in turn will probably cause more dispersal :-D

Ps Apollo I here you have been reducing the population again :-D
