Wildfowling, where to start?

BASC run a “Try Wildfowling Scheme” where they put you in touch with a local (to you) Wildfowling Club where for a small cost a club member will take you on onto the club marshes for a morning or evening flight. Well worth considering to give you a real taste of what Wildfowling is like.
Really!? I'll give them a contact on that one for sure! Thanks a lot for the advice:)

The best side by side with 3” chambers is the AyA No 3 magnum.

But a 2 3/4” chamber can hold more than enough shot - even with steel for 90% of wildfowling needs. Most side by sides can use standard steel although recommended that they are not choked tighter than 1/2 choke.

The vast majority of wild fowlers I see out on the foreshore engage far too early at birds well and truly out of range. Instead keep still and quiet and be patient. There will be other birds that come in close and its these that end up in the bag.

As I said in an earlier post, its akin to deer stalking. Take your time and wait for the good shot.

I do have my old AyA Yeoman with a pistol grip and beavertail fore end which you may borrow. Its only a 2 3/4” chamber but its shot hundreds of duck and a fair few geese in its life.

I have a yildiz wildfowler, shoots as well as any other I've had and it seems reasonable for the price. It's 3 and a half chambers but I've never used more than a 3" through it, have also used it on walked up days and it didn't seem out of place.

About 30 years ago I joined the Gloucestershire Wildflowers Association - you had to do a I think 3 Sundays wildfowl recognition course at Slimbridge then you got paired up with a member for a few outings to learn the ground (water), tides, etc. Neither of us fired a shot in 3 outings but a bit like a blank stalk it was still an interesting experience. It was a long early drive to sit on a marsh and then I moved further away. Liked the idea and the feel of it though.

What ever you do Don't join KWC !!!
Join a proper group nr you so you can get to know the mash inside out.
Oh a good tall stick this is a must and would be the cheapest thing and your best friend in snotty mud.

Strongly agree. Got a couple of these I use for most of my fowling alongside my AYA Matador 10 bore. Bombproof guns, I sling high performance steel through mine all the time (and I’m not dead yet, no I’m not recommending it before anyone gets upset). Great guns for the marsh.

I would get a pair of chest waders - neoprene with integral wellies rather than posh breathable gortex with separate boots. You will need such on the marsh mainly so you get down onto the mud / marsh
I do however disagree with this, neoprene waders are ok for warmth but you will often find yourself walking long distances in thick mud. Neoprene boot foot waders will have you sweating like mad before you reach your spot and I personally don’t like walking mud in boot foots. Stockingfoot waders are an absolute game changer for walking in thick mud, no more feet coming out the boot when you’re up to your bollocks in the thick stuff. My hodgman aesis are now 3.5 seasons old and I will be replacing them with another pair of stocking foots. A good sear of wading boots (simms for example) will also help.

Find a local club who can pop you with a mentor, don’t try tidal marshes without a mentor.

Don’t feel like this is a very fair comment, the KWCA are an excellent club.

I agree with Paul, @paul o' :tiphat:

Do (either of you) have anything constructive to bring to the table with this?
The most constructive thing i can say is KWC shouldn't use BASC power plays funds to buy marshes from under Essex Wildfowlers .
I was a toe dipping member of KWC to see what they were about the main thing I noticed was members without a clue going out onto some of the most deadly wetlands in Essex without knowing the ground pre getting a time permit /slot only to truck up and blast away at the clouds.
As per Tim i'v been on the mashes from a very young age in the 60's as a Wagbi member pre the age of BASC .
With a 10bore few carts and a coat to lay on with a tarp over as cover only shooting at what i could take home and what i knew was allowed.
I'v nothing against the Fowlers of Kent or any other we are a breed apart! its just the way the inside deals were done.
Rivers West even named one of there outfits after the chairman A.J "ps" it's got a short arse coat so the wind drives up the arse ! , walking its very hot and your better off buying a bin liner. Stand still yes its waterproof.
2011 the short sighted merge of LOS wf
Then would see it's members leave as KWC poured it's members onto the Barling marshes to the point you would be lucky to get a flight .
Along the way the once clean mashes became a cartrage factory, and finding human waste wasn't out of the Norm .
So no nothing Constructive about a club that's a mainly all about money and mashes.
What i would say is join a club that's got old fellers that still have a passion and don't mind taking or walking a new WF into the safe pleasure of a WF.

Kent are aggressively land grabbing across the south and east of England, wouldn’t be too bad if it was previously unshot land but they have taken land from some long established small wildfowling clubs, often far away from their power base in Kent, usually by simply outbidding them at lease renewal time. They are all about gaining acreage and membership. They have a business model and stick to it.
