Wire haired viz

Hi folks,

My lab is getting old.........very old.

I am looking for a "do everything" dog just like my lab but something other than another lab.

I used to do a lot of shotgun work but now more rifle based. Still want a dog to beat, flush, retrieve,go into water but also be steady on deer when with the rifle and stick to my heel when needed.

1st and foremost this will be a family pet so needs to be good with kids.

Would appreciate whv owners in put and any YouTube videos of various working whv.

Many thanks

I look after one, very loyal and biddable, can be a bit possessive, quite a needy dog certainly for attention, I believe they are referred to as velcro dogs, certainly doesn't come over as aggressive. As to the wire haired part, this one is wire haired and it has short hair, certainly doesn't like the cold or the rain, a friend also has a wire haired that has such fine hair it looks like a drowned rat when wet

I've been working various types of dogs for nearly 50 years.
I got my first HWV just under 18 months ago.
He's an easily trained, biddable, very affectionate dog, slightly immature for his age perhaps, but is a keen retriever, will hunt up and point game and found a shot Roe at just under a year old.
As said, they seem to crave attention, but I think they are quite good fun.
I was quite careful where I sourced my pup, as I think due to previous high prices, etc a few people bred them to make money, rather than produce the best pup, the same can be said for a lot of different breeds perhaps.
I'm glad I got my pup and so far he is coming on nicely.

I have a HWV and all of the above comments are true. Massive character, slow to mature so don’t be in a rush, possessive of food bowls and his favourite corner of his bed but a brilliant house pet. Devoted to people and wants to be with someone all the time but happiest with two of us that do most with him. He has a good nose but can be distracted easily which is getting better with time. Doesn’t like cold/wet weather so may not be ideal for wildfowling but he is a thin coated wire rather than having a fluffy coat if that makes sense. Mine loves stalking and will follow blood trails well and indicate deer by air scenting. His ground scenting is getting better with age as he matures. All in all great fun dogs
