Which dog?

I know this has been done to death… but please humour me 😬 I’m here to be educated.
My husband has decided he wants a deer dog. However, I know I’ll be the one who has the dog the most. I have 7 working collies, trained them all myself. I’ve tried to persuade him to try one of them but he won’t 😂
Anyway, it’ll be a pet as well as working dog and I know that the sensible choice is a black lab, but honestly, I find them so boring. I can’t get excited about having one.
I do however like BMH but I know they are hounds so tougher to train, especially for a novice. I’ve trained all my collies, and a huntaway, so am experienced with them but never a deer dog.
If he’s away and it’s not getting any work, will it go self employed? Am I stupid for even considering one?

Also to add, I want to get a guard dog for the house/yard. Would a herder type also track….? As in Mali or Dutch herder?

With seven collies and a huntaway on the premises, what need have you of a guard dog?
I lost the huntaway to cancer last year and really miss her presence. She was a big bitch with a big bark and looked pretty intimidating.
The collies barely even bark at anyone and just wag their tails.

Must be a different strain of collies to what I've got! 🤣

They use heading dogs in NZ...sort of like a collie...may be you should look at what you have got.

Have a look at the GSP.
Versatile, smart and athletic. They’re also clean around the house and protective.
One might even open up a new interest for you, they’ll hunt both fur and feather. They’re not as easy to train as a lab, but they’re a lot more rewarding to work.

A BMH is a very specific dog bred for the sole purpose of tracking wounded deer and boar, or people by the German police. They can be very much a one person dog. If you want different and a dog around the house a Teckel would be ideal.

I’d love a teckel but the husband won’t.

GWP- you have lots of dog training experience- they will push you to the limits at times- but fun dogs to have and they will protect you to the last when it comes to it. Mine is very protective with my wife when out walking, but very social when needs to be.

When the wife’s Patterdale terrier goes she wants Lab xGWP as not quite so hard headed.

What about a teckle I use one for stalking and have got a litter of 9 week old pups the now
Post #13 husband won’t have a teckle -

How are your adult dogs like off the lead. Not when working deer , but loose in fields when being exercised ?
