Wood or Synthetic

Wood for looks. And a good wood stock is as good as anything, performance-wise. But if, by in the field you mean climbing up ladders, over rocky ground, hiding behind/in bushes or in a hide or something, or letting your rifle rattle around in the back of a pickup or in a boot, then a good synthetic material will save some tears. Unless the distressed look floats your boat.
Agreed.

No issue with either as long as they are properly put together. I have used crap wood stocks and I have used crap synthetic stocks. I have also used good wood stock and good sythn stocks. I don't understand why a scratched plastic stock is any better or worse than a scratched wooden stock, all other things being equal.

I prefer wood as it has a nicer feel and I also own one laminate which is also ok if not a little boring. Some of my rifles have very nice wood and some are plain but I am not precious about them. They are put on the ground, knocked on gates by accident, got barbed wire scars on them etc. When I am squeezing through a gap somewhere, I am only thinking about the lenses on the scope, not what is happening to a gun or a stock.

Some people are too precious. Same as people who spend £7k on a watch and wrap it up in cotton wool and leave it in the drawer. Spending £7k on a watch is totally ok if you wear it each day. It was made to be used, same as a wooden stocked gun whether it is plain or a stupidly high grade of walnut.

Get what you like, make sure it is put together right and enjoy it.
