Wooden free standing high seats

Would 150 be reasonable?
If you are going to sell them then you need to be inletting the uprights for the steps and wiring the steps too.

Also you have listed as free standing but the photo shows it strapped to a tree, are they stable enough free standing?

£150 would be reasonable for the time and materials.

Far too cheap, don't sell yourself cheap as it is a lot of work/materials then all the other costs that get overlooked.
An hr in a big garage is a 100 quid.
How much are the metal ones ? Are they around the 300 mark? Give or take? There probably a lot more users friendly as well to set up and more haha

By coincidence I was looking at these yesterday as I need a free standing seat to go in a location where there are no suitable trees. This style of seat is being made & sold by Devana for, I recall, just over £200 & it doesn't have wired or inlet rungs. It also appears to be made from dried but untreated internal grade timber so not sure how long it'd last in the elements?

Am now contemplating sourcing the materials locally & making one myself - if you were closer to me I'd certainly be interested in one from you.

I did look at galvanised ones but those on the Devana website look a bit 'cheap' & the pics of the guy shooting from one doesn't look very good as far as dimensions & comfort go either!

Bite the bullet make 3 take out a trade account and test the water, he who dares Rodney.
I have 7 made over time with x2 free standing and could not make any for 150 with the price of steel/electric/consumables
TBH.
That one above 8 years later.

Good luck have a go. :tiphat:

I wouldn’t be buying one of those either then!

The wood really does need inletting or additional wood adding between the rungs so that if the fixings on the rungs rust through there is back up support.

This was S/H of SD very well made but totally impractical, the rail height was 5" too low also the hoop was far too small also not further enough fwd. But I could see the potential in it and could never have brought the materials (ladder) and ally for the £90 it cost.
With workshop time it is very usable but in real cost stands in £220.00 it will last a very long time also quite light.
Beggars belief someone would make something that well built but close to impossible to shoot from.

That is way too cheap, I made one very similar to that (copied from a YouTube clip) used tanalised timber, with all the bolts and screws cost me around £100, that was a few years ago and its still going strong, lasting a lot longer than the metal ones, it even lasted being thrown down into a river by an anti, dragged it out with tractor, still rock solid.
So I would be costing up the materials and adding labour @£25/hour (I know I'm cheap!)

i build similar but house rungs in and fit fence type wire, bolts all round as well as screwing rungs.
all cut ends are treated. bulldog washers when bolting together.
I have a small joiners shop so set up for multibles and although i charge £275 flatpack i dont make very much from these.
£150 is way to low.

As every one else said not enough. I made two out of treated timber and did not inlet the rungs but put scraps of the treated timber on the legs between the rungs, worked so far.
And stand on flat stones or pieces of slab to minimise decay.
Delivery or collection needs some thought.

I am £120 for nine 45 x 95 x 4.8m treated batons alone (which is what you need for making one double freestanding seat if you want a decent height). On top of that you need bolts, plate washers, decking screws and galv ring nails.

No need to inlet the steps if you build them properly, we have had seats out for 10 years and no issues with heavier people using them.

If you look back my threads I have sold a few on here previously and no complaints so far - and a few more ordered!

Gixer

I very seriously advise the liability issues of a maker and the person who put it up there ! It doesn't even need to be the buyer who climbs it , a kid? trespasser? etc . Also the life of the timber and the joints .
Unless your stealing the timber and ancillaries £200 is way too little even making for friends. Need anymore discouragement go speak to an insurance broker about accident / Liability insurance.

Not sure how the law works south or the border - but if no instructions are given to climb and someone climbs up something here they do so at their own risk…..if you can find one single case of a prosecution due to someone climbing a highseat off their own back and injuring themselves I would be very interested to see it.
