Worth getting measured?

I'm very new to stalking and this is only the third deer I've shot on my own. He's also got the nicest head of any I've shot. I'll be honest I don't really know much about getting heads measured. I am aware that he wouldn't be a gold medal or anything like that but is it worth getting him measured? Thanks in advance for the advice.

A lot of roe scoring is entirely down to skull weight (so dont cut the skull, or remove extra pieces) dunno, never had any of my deer scored but It seems like golds can be like.... pretty much any antler configuration just as long as they have that skull weight.

I love the really deep brow tine on that one antler, a few abnormal deer get it but your one looks like It still holds the typical shape really well.

I guess I'll see what it's like weight wise once it's all cleaned up. Regardless it's still quite a nice head. I just need to convince the wife to let me put him on a wall somewhere!

I narrowly missed him a couple of months ago as I wasn't quick enough to get the rifle on the sticks. It was the first time I'd tried calling a buck and I think I was in shock it actually worked 😂 I was close to giving up this morning but thought I'd set up in a gap in a hedgerow about 200 meters from the wood he lived in. I waited about 20 minutes and he popped out. This time I'd made sure I had tne rifle set up on the sticks ready and dropped him at about 150 meters. I learn something new everytime I go out and it was nice to put right some mistakes I made the first time round and be able to get him this time.

A good memorable buck irrespective of whether it makes a medal.
Remember it will need to dry out for at least 30 days after it's cleaned. Weigh it then and if it's got a good weight submit it.

Lovely buck, definitely worth getting that one done, might even score better than you think with the weight in his bases. As stated above, make sure you leave it full scull to score most accurately.

Whatever you do, don't bury it/hang it in a tree and come back in 6 months to prep it. Boil it properly/get someone to do it properly as it's a great memory you will look back on for a lifetime when it's on your wall so much better off doing it right 👍

If your a member of BASC they will measure for nothing but you pay for the medal if it makes one

Thanks for that. I'm keen to have a go at prepping one myself sometime but I think this one is too nice. I think I'll get someone to do it for me properly!

This. I’ll add that I’ve used cheaper hair bleach products in the past and it’s left an off colour. I buy 12% food grade peroxide off Amazon now.

If found soaking kitchen towel with it and wrapping the skull the best. I tried submerging skulls in the past and wasted heaps of peroxide this way.

Power hose is the easiest way to get boiled stuff off but turn the setting light around the nose bones if you are.

Oh and CIC don’t charge either if it’s a no score and tbh, I think a lot of folk find they’re ’more official’ than basc and the medals look better

I'm keen to have a go at prepping one myself sometime so thanks for the advice. I think this time I'll get someone to do it for me though in case I mess it up!
