XL-Bully dogs

Much as I hate that descriptive.

I was driving along a main road today with my dogs in the hilux.
All of a sudden a huge Pit Bull bitch was running along side me on the opposite verge.
She ran onto the road and was hit by a car coming the other way and was skittled.
I had already began pulling in to try and retrieve the dog and once she was hit she ran over to me.
I coaxed her in and opened the passenger door for her, she climbed up and across to the driver seat.
I persuaded her into the rear seat and drove her to the vet where it was confirmed she had a rear broken leg.

She got in and out the hilux unaided ( although it seems she would only be coaxed by me and not vet staff etc) and all through , apart from lifting the leg to walk she showed no signs of it at all.
She never once made as much as a tiny whimper and was super friendly and quite attached to me it seems.

I suppose the point is that she must have been the toughest dog I’ve ever seen! Seriously hit and injured with broken bones and not one noise or sign of pain or aggression.

As it turned out her chip was English so it was suspected she’d been dumped up in Scotland so I actually said to the vet I would take her but it turned out she’d been rescued to up here by a local a week or so ago and had escaped the garden and went for a run.

The rights or wrongs of owners isn’t what the thread is about it’s mainly about just how tough these bloody machines of a dog actually are.
I was astounded at it tbh.

whilst i applaud you for rescuing the poor thing, your a braver man than me, being in a confined space with a wounded dog like that,
iv pulled over for all kinds of dogs in the past running wild near roads as i cant bare the thought of them getting run over or been lost and scared,
probably stems back to being savaged buy my own German shepherd 15 years ago, but thats another story,
well done and a happy ending 👍

Lot of them getting dumped after another piece of knee jerk dog legislation. Good on ya pal, I'd have done the same.

Yeh , apparently it’s a thing, drive them up here and dump them
This one was locally owned though. Just an escapee , poor thing.

Mrs Rake wasn’t impressed I’d told the vet I’d take her though 😂
I would have though, she was so timid and a lovely beast.

Having had a pointer attacked & rendered unconscious by 3 of them I’d have them shot on sight and you’re right, they do seem to be impervious to pain. The one I got to didn’t even flinch when I broke my heavy walking stick across its face. Not sure I consider that a desirable trait in a dog I was sharing a space with.

One of the brutes attacked a guy in hamilton last week. It had apparently been a rescue brought up from England too..
Guy had it on a harness and it pulled him over then proceeded to drag the victim by the legs for 5+mins , it was eventually shot after laser had no effect..
I'm all for " its the owners fault" as usually is but these are killing machines..
We need a license for an airgun up here but can have a man eating dog nb haha

Thats the problem with harnesses.

Want to pull a sled, put it on a harness, same with a horse.

Want to lead a strong animal, put it in a halter, hard to pull with your head sideways.

I’m a believer in its owners not the dogs but …..
after seeing one “ in the flesh “ that’s a lot of power / muscle to control if it goes off on one …..
And most dog owners can’t control what they have never mind one of them

Mastiffs, Cane Corsos, Akitas, American Bulldogs etc all have a lot of power to control.

Even if dogs are bred with certain traits, it really is bad owners, either useless owners or actually bad owners that want them as a weapon.

Any of the dogs above and XL Bullys can do a lot of damage but banning them was stupid.

Well done @Rake Aboot, I'd have done the same.

Yes it seems to be mostly scumbags that have them which doesn't help or idiots who can't train a dog.. then you have the breeding any old thing for profit so handing down all bad traits..
I've only been up close to one, I was out with a Yr old lab at the time and this xl was 8 months, it was already about 5 or 6 larger than the lab and the scummy owner said that it will get alot bigger and seemed proud of the fact
It was honestly massive, it you'd shot it with a 12 bore with anything less than bbs ,it would have shrugged it off .. Still can't get over how big it was!
I'm all for the ban

Hahahahaha. Bawbag 😂

Yeh the owners have contacted the vet to sort out her treatment etc.

I’d still have had her, she was a bit lovely thing, bloody terrifying to see mind , but then so is a Malinois on full flight.

It’s definitely the owners not the dogs, but for sure , certain breeds need licensed.

While halter is (way) better than harness, most decent size mature dogs (say 40kg and up), have so much muscle in the neck that many full grown males (let alone teens or female) cannot control them if the dog decides to go. The halter just doesn't have the desired effect.

I guess the question remains what is the point of owning such a dog? It can’t be because it fits in a handbag and is cuddly-cute. Neither will it be much use in running down rabbits or deer as a lurcher with a good percentage of saluki in it is.

Commendable stuff from the Op in terms of unbiased animal welfare but unless he plans to impress his FEO by chaining it to his gun cabinet I’m at a loss to understand the attraction.

I mind years ago on an hpr training wknd and the well renowned trainer brought out a prong collar for a dog.
It would be a few years old, nice natured large muslander but was pulling its owner, a small lady that now had back problems.
Pulled her all over the shop constantly

Must admit not into that type of dog and don't see the attraction of owning/training 1, but they do say with right breeding and right training can be great dogs.
But so can any other breed without the hassle or risk

There have been a spate of deaths caused by these dogs attacking people. This is due to the strength and aggressive nature of the dogs - hardwired by their genetics. It is not just due to bad owners - these animals are inherently unpredictable and as the OP points out, pretty much unstoppable when the mood takes them.
There is no reason for anyone to own such a dog - the ban is correct.
