My father used to lick his plate on the odd occasion that he was feeling silly, and when I asked if I could do the same he used to glare over the top of his plate and say "when you're a father you can lick your plate!".
How he managed it with a beard I really don't know! I'm now both bearded and a father, but I can't manage to lick my plate without making a shocking mess of myself!
