You Poms watching the Ashes?

This is probably the sole discussion in which my personal views will be diametrically opposed to your's Mr Gryphon; although I think of myself as a Scot I support England. I did fear a whitewash by the ageing home team but as I write there is a spark of hope. Previous tours have often become disillusioned over Christmas and New Year away from home and lost the series.
Smith "having a go" at Monty Panesar was ill-judged and has re-raised the whole sandpaper issue again. I do hate the sledging which goes on; but that will be a self-inflicted wound or own-goal.
A good competitive series would be a win for cricket; that would be the best result.

Well the start of the ashes has really lived up to expectation. Highs and lows all in a day.
Sorry for whoever has tickets for day 4!

.....better to be a bit of a numpty than a cheat......😀

........and looking forward to watching 2, 3 and 4 in person...
haaaaaa thats been done before quid pro quo on here

"English cricket minties" likely refers to the use of mints by some members of the England cricket team to alter the condition of the ball for reverse swing. Former spinner Monty Panesar has admitted that he and others used mints, among other items like sun cream, to help change the ball's properties. This practice, while sometimes used, is generally considered to be against the spirit of the game. Saint Monty eh?

  • Player admission: Monty Panesar wrote in his autobiography that he was involved in changing the ball's condition for the seamers, and that other items like sun cream and even the zip on his trousers were used to alter the ball.

Marcus Trescothick revealed that he and England's bowlers used mints to shine the ball, creating the swing that helped them win the 2005 Ashes. He used the saliva from mints to polish the ball, which made it swing more effectively than with regular spit. While applying saliva is legal, using artificial substances is not, so this was a form of ball tampering, though the ICC has stated it would not outlaw sucking sweets.
