Your Queen?

As others have said, its not the done thing and apart from the single occassion ( already mentioned) there is no history of it.

It's cold 50% Fahrenheit windy 30mph and rainy here. It sounds like The Open:british:doesn't it? I'm inside and have wondered something about your Queen. Why doesn't she abacate and give him a chance to be king while he is relatively healthy? Heck that spry old bird no offence ment, could outlive us all. capt david

She won't abdicate, because it was the abdication of her uncle, that resulted in her father becoming king and in her view, his premature death
Her father was not a particularly strong or healthy man and suffered from a bad stutter (check out the movie - "The Kings Voice") and he was forced to become king on his brother abdication, something he neither wanted or had been trained for.
The timing wasn't great either, he became king just a year or so before WW2 started and was king throughout the war. he developed lung cancer and died in 1948.
Because of these events, she has made it plain or several occasions that the the idea of abdication is abhorent to her and she will never do it.
Charles knows that, and simply waits for his mother to die.
Given that his grandmother (the queens mother) lived to be over 100, he may have to wait a few more years yet.

Cheers

Bruce

Every starter for 10 from the OP a winner eh?

‘Billy, don’t try to cross that bridge!’

Bridge Too Far. My father made some of the German vehicles they used in the film cross the bridge. No one told them that they intended to drive them 100m and then blow them up so he made them really strong thinking they were going to be driven all over the place. Apparently they had to use twice the amount of explosives to blow them up than they should have.

Because by definition to abdicate is failing at ones duty and while she is able to do the duty she promised to do, why would she?

Retirement maybe..... I'm not anti but lead by example at least. Job's on the whole that the average person does day to day would see many with knee/back issues etc aside of general health. I've lost a handful of friends/collegues who have passed before or on retirement age never getting to enjoy easier times with their family or the pensions they grew working long & hard for it mostly.
Seem's our country is to backward & to worried about political correctness to make effective changes.
If you want dole from the population there should be a card the councils can issue then stamp after to confirm the person or group has cleared graffiti, tidy pathways litter etc in local estates/parks or wherever is needed most in your area. So many handouts & immigration adds daily.
With so much funding needed they raise the pensionable age to compensate & give a few more years of taxable income for them to exlplore. Kind of drives you nuts knowing even if a PM does a crap job you cant sack them & yet they still go on to enjoy massive pensions that a two or three of us could manage better on.
Her age is great for tradition's & maintaining them but even Charles is gerationaly detatched from today's younger developing students & what they need to go through to have a healthy or sustainable pension.

My dear departed Uncle Fred Hopcott was part of the Airborne Division and had a lucky escape - not so much many other boys.
I was being rather too subtle - I was paraphrasing from the Billy Goats Gruff - there's a troll under that bridge but here we go crossing it again

I suggest Tim visits the American graveyard at Omaha Beach.

Hang on.....I have said I respected the sacrifice which was vast......but make a statement of fact and it is turned around as often on here. My Granddad was in the trenches in WW1 along side US troops and came through it but spoke very little about it to my Dad as he died when I was 3.

By the way, where do you get the "capt" from? Were you a captain in the Services or of a ship or something or is it like a made-up thing, like Duke Ellington or Colonel Tom Parker?
The Captian designation is a tiny bit of a misnomer. It is basically a US Coast Guard License that allows me to operate, a vessel, up to 100 tons, out to 100 miles and carry 6 passengers. Those persons are generally called Captains. The main reason that I took the course and passed the test, was to be able to operate a fishing charter boat, although I occasionally operated as a 2nd licensee on coastal work boats. That was when I went through a period, when I wanted to change my life, I sold my business, bought a boat, and began to charter. That lasted about a year, before I decided:old: rather be in a classroom with young minds, who know I'm in charge, rather than on a boat with a bunch of landlubbers, who are authorities on game fishing and think that they should be in charge! capt david:old:

The queen actually has a fantastic amount of power if she ever chose to use it. For example, all law in the UK is subject to her which absolves her from any crime. She can appoint anyone as Prime Minister, it's only convention that the leader of the party with the most seats is traditionally asked to form a government. However, there is always the risk of revolution should she choose to use her power which is why her position is largely symbolic.

Met her once. She's very short.

In fact, no Acts of Parliament can become law until she signs them. The Royal Consent. This is, of course these days a formality. I suppose there might be some circumstances that could be dreamed up where she would veto laws being passed but I can't envisage this actually happening. It serves I suppose as a check on an out of control rogue government. Can’t see that happening.:-|

Aha. I see. In the UK, using given titles such as “sir” for someone who has a knighthood or a military rank (ranks of captain or equivalent and above in theory are retained and can be used even after retirement) isn’t something people generally use, except perhaps in formal situations. It’s seen as poor form and a bit pompous. Sort of trying to be seen as more important. One exception that sort of proved this is Captain Mark Phillips, who married into the Royal Family. For a while.

I hope not, It kinda started as an extended family thing before the internet. There was me, my stepson Little David, My godson David D and his cousin David G. it made it easier. Along came the internet , where it seems to fit. I only use my given name, almost never my sur name. capt david:old:

David, as previously you have uncovered a complicated bit of British life.
"Captain" is used as a courtesy title for working civilian pilots. The commissioned rank of Captain in the Army is a junior one.
However in the Royal Navy it is different. A "Captain R.N." is the equivalent of a Colonel or higher.

In the post-war years many ex-forces officers used their old rank as a title but it is not done much today. It's seen as a little bit like those folk who style themselves "Doctor" in everyday life on the strength of a Ph.D. I will surely be corrected now by an expert !

It is also a little known fact that none of us own the land our houses sit on.
