Your tips for the best way to clean grimy woodwork?

What about brake cleaner? It removes most crud and evaporates quickly. Might be worth a go

I used very hot water, scrubbing brush and Cilit Bang Grease and Grime on this old rifle BSA CF2 .308 Restoration

You can see how dirty and greasy it was and how nice it came up. Didn't take much work at all and after a few coats of Danish oil it looks and feels superb. It did even take some of the old varnish off which I was almost going to get some Nitromors for but thought I'd try the gentle approach first and very glad I did.

On a very old wall piece, which had a stock which was completely black, I used a steam wallpaper stripper. It was very successful! I did the stock twice - all the muck came off to reveal a really well figured stock underneath. Then it was a standard re-finish and polish. No cracks appeared - good result!
