Zeiss Repair

Yes I intend to give them a try when I get them back. Bit of a let down tho, great binoculars but strange that one side fogged up. Not had them for 10 years and only go west for a couple of weeks each year. Anyway life is such Graeme, I have another big birthday next year so the kids can start saving.

Which side has fogged up? I only see out of my left eye, let me guess,,,,,,,,,,that will be the foggy side:banghead:

Hi,
I sent my 7x42 zeiss back to Germany myself after the were unable to keep focus. I got a letter back from them with a quote for repair 750euros. I replied to their letter stating I was a professional stalker taking worldwide guest out stalking and would not like to have to tell them of this dissapointing service after having promoting zeiss products as the number 1 in sport optics. Guess what got a email the next day from zeiss saying they had looked at my binos again and the repair would be free of charge and they would even pay for postage. Thanks zeiss.

Good point! Try this, nothing to lose...

As an option when you do get your Zeiss back...try contacting Paul Burke In Kingshurst Birmingham 0121 788 1050 If they are repairable he can do It for you, I use him for scope overhauls / repairs and his prices are sensible...HTH

Thanks sparko I've noted his name and number down and will decide soon what I'm going to do.
Thanks to everyone for their assistance.

dont stand for it k333roe tell them there service is very poor compared to s&b or swarovski and for the price of the zeiss stuff you should get good back up. like the other two top brands give.

I am the service engineer for Zeiss in the UK and the person who examined this binocular when it came to us for repair.

One side of the binocular was misty and the other side was completely full of water. This is one of the worst cases of water ingress that I have seen and in my opinion ( and that of my colleagues) was almost certainly caused by immersion in water. There is no way that this amount of water could have entered the binocular just from the optics misting.
The binocular in question is classed as weatherproof and if the side with the water was simply misted we would have had no problem with repairing it under warranty. We have seen very few 7x42 Dialyts where water has physically entered the binocular through natural causes.

I decided, due to the extensive damage, that the binocular was beyond economical repair and offered a new 7x42 FL at a special price which is less than the repair cost due to the need to replace all of the internal optics within the left barrel ( 5 lenses and 1 prism assembly). I would have had to replace the prism in the right barrel and as mentioned earlier this would have been done under warranty.

On this particular binocular the 30 year warranty is actually 5 years parts and labour , 25 years parts only for manufacturing fault for internal optics and mechanics.

Having been in the industry for 20 years for both Leica and Zeiss I think that I know when a binocular has been immersed and what our competitors would offer.

We look at each case on an individual basis and if the binocular had completely misted we would have carried out a FOC repair.

My manager (Mark Karn) and our sales staff for the hunting market are members of this forum, read threads such as this, and will always try their best to resolve any problems mentioned here.

Hi, i to am a zeiss owner, took me a while to take the plunge and spend as much money on a set of binos, but i have to say i shopped around and just to let you know i found that there was very little difference in both swar or zeiss optics but the salesman said you always get better aftersales service from swar, i hope this not to be the case, but as in this instance there is always two sides to the story.
Regards Neil

Well garymh, I can assure you these glasses were never immersed in water, out on the hill on a morning, binoculars fine, driving rain so I put them in my gortex jacket pocket. On the high ground I removed the glasses and they were fogged up. 2,500 feet up and I have the Queens cousin as witness as he was on the hill with me.
So don't come this certainly caused by immersion in water rubbish.
THEY WERE IN MY POCKET.
What you have not mentioned it that they were serviced in 2008 whilst a dent to that side was being repaired, funny EH !!!

Just adding ;
Anyone who was on the west coast of Scotland in the first week of October will agree that it never stopped raining all week, day and night.
I was along with my friends, going to the hill each day in damp tweeds and boots. However, they all had binoculars that didn't fog up, am I supposed to leave my binoculars in the lodge on wet days, in that case I'd never have had them out that week.

Swarovski fix things free of charge
I have heard some hum dingers about zeiss and leica aftersales service
Very rarely do you hear this from swaro owners,do you!

Hi wolverine, there is some things to be learned from your statement, glad i have Sawarovski scopes and binoculars, its a pity why Zeiss dont replace their products FOC as i am sure they have lost a lot of potential sales over this issue.

Just to add i was stalking in the west coast myself in October (near Oban) no problem with my Swarovski optics, and i can vouch for the rain too!!

Have to say I'm a Swaro man myself and had faultless service with them on the only time I've had to call them up. Regarding Zeiss though, a mate of mine had a scratched lens on his Zeiss RF bins and also he felt the RF unit wasn't working up to spec. He sent them in for a repair/inspection and they replaced the whole unit FOC, so they do put out sometimes!

Well I'm having them returned to me and will have to look at my options, will keep

This is worrying. Have an old Zeiss 4x32 rail mount scope that the elevation (only has elevation on it) has seized and spoke to Zeiss at the Newark show and got the details of them but now and wondering if I dare send it in, assuming I get it back from Plod that is, from the prices quoted in this thread I doubt I could afford the service it needs .

Hi Brithunter,

You mention "the prices quoted on this thread" but unfortunately only one price has been mentioned here.

Please feel free to send your 'scope for us to look at. We are very flexible with our repairs and are quite happy to carry out the vast majority of them at no cost.

I drive a Ford Focus. If I was to drive this car into a lake and then post on an internet forum that Ford would not repair the car under warranty, but wanted to charge me for the necessary repairs, would this put you off ever buying a Ford car or make you assume that all repairs carried out by Ford would not be under warranty and would be very expensive.

As has been mentioned earlier in this forum - there are two sides to every story.

Gary.

Spell it out garymh, are you calling me and a close relation of the queens, liars. There is only one side to this story and you seem to be a stranger to the truth because you don't want to believe it. I have already sent a reply from the gentleman who was on the hill with me explaining that the glasses were on my person at 2,500 ft when we noticed they had fogged up, ask your boss Mark Karn

He has a copy of the E mail so be very careful what you imply...........
