New house - Open Cert, can i shoot in my paddock?

A friend has constructed a backstop in one of his fields. Just made a wooden box from 4x2 foot ply, filled with sand and refaces with a sheet of ply as required.

I have a mini range in my back gatden and now had 4 compliants and 3 visits from armed police due to noise. Although all is ok i tend to limit use of non subsonic rounds in garden to keep neighbours happy.....mind you he films the lovely foxes too and is asking me why the numbers have reduced so much since i moved in

Manage the noise, don't make a big thing about it and provided bullets don't go over your boundary and end up in the dirt just get on with it. Nobody seems too worried with banging away at pigeons or indeed pigeon scarers - all standard country noises. Most people can't tell the difference between shotgun, bird scarer or a rifle.

Planning permission for a mound of earth? So long as it isn't being put there so you can build a mock castle to live in behind it, I doubt the planning authorities will be bothered.

Have you drafted yourself a written letter to your self saying that you can shoot on your own land ? If you get stopped they may ask if you have permission from yourself to actually shoot on your own land

know there's a question for you

A friend of mine is just now having to apply for retrospective planning and change of use for his mound of earth with a target board in front of it - all begun from one carefully written objection and all not a million miles away from our OP. Change of use being from agri/equestrian to occasional private range.

Sounds mad I know but down here there are some right 'if I can't do it then why should you' MF's - and some pedantic planning fascists too...

Big Tip for the OP - make yourself a proper good backstop on a frame ON WHEELS or SKIDS - if it's moveable then it's temporary which means killjoys can but FRO!

Crikey!

range rules are not relevant hes shooing on an open licence you dont get that backstop of Clearance when stalking especially in the South
(plus i think the Angle has been made a lot steeper my old club is Complaining they had to spend a lot of money to get the bank to teh New angle and it wont stay there due to laws of physics an there is a footpath running behind the butts which is not closed )

your not making a commercial range. Its for Zero and practice of your hunting guns as allowed by your FAC conditions etc
even then there are plenty of open Civi ranges about now that run for hunters on your open ticket OR are cleared up to a calibre that Target shooters cant use

you dont need a massive earth works either just something sensible and safe

You may be missing my point. If you can't define what constitutes a safe backstop how can you assess whether it's safe? Everyone should know what constitutes a safe backstop for the calibre and bullet weight which they use.

One of the ACTUAL questions posed during a visit from ARV at my home address!

I hope you get all your deer to line up wit ha HO military approved Backstop Burm Do they stay while you Get the JCB to construct it and inspect with a Protractor as well as get confirmation that the 2.9Km behind is actually clear of people ??? :D

Buy a large round bale if Silage will stop any deer rifle round

I've just 'dumped the soil' for storage Mr planning officer Sir.

Targets? No I'm just into garden art

Whilst your here can I show you all these holes my dog dug - no he's not a contractor - just keen on digging ......

Make sure if using baled stuff that it's damp, stuff @ 100 yds is capable of setting them on fire!

An earth mound is not a construction and requires no planning permission, neither does a compost heap!
I would love to see what they are getting you to apply for?

the "range" is a foolish thing to mention
it is not a range in any way shape or form.

that would be a dedicated and specifically designed range

this is a guy shooting stuff in his garden

remove the targets when done and keep your neighbours happy

there is no change to use unless you are saying that this field will be permanently used as a range and nothing else

... if you can't define a safe backstop you can't assess a safe backstop, if you can't assess a safe backstop you aren't competent ... you do see where this is leading to ... ? Ultimately, if you believe that a round Silage Bale equates to a safe backstop for your rifle and bullet factoring ricochets etc. that's up to you ... it's your FAC after all. However, if I was asked by the authorities what constitutes a 'safe' backstop I would be quoting a recognised definition because a FEO can't argue with that. When a FEO clears a piece of land as fit for zeroing purposes you would hope that the FEO knows something about templating for the calibre and round.

As ever, each to their own.

Best backstop in the world is a few billion tonnes of planet Earth. For me, if the bullet isn't going to end up in the ground it ends up staying in the rifle

Crack on old bean, you have open ticket, I'm sure you won't let the bullet leave your boundary???? As you have an open ticket and in the eyes of the law you can decide wether is a safe shot or not( you wouldn't have been given the open ticket if you didn't have a clue would you old bean??)

ffs , you are doing nowt wrong,

building ranges etc etc, FFS !!! IF. Someone complains about the noise just come to some common ground!!!!

hells bells your going about a LAWFULL ACTIVITY, if the neighbours don't like it tough titties, tell them to stop mowing the grass at 7am on a Sunday morning, lol lol,

noise is is the only issue, and I'm sure the neighbours will have a polite word with you if it is
