PPU amunition for hunting

PPU why the mixed reviews?

I rephrased the question due to there being another post with my previous question...
Ppu is it good enough for hunting? - Page 3

I bought a box of 270win because it was cheap and I was planning on doing some range shooting.
Though not as cheap as the italian Northwest ammo this one at least has some ballistic info

I read very mixed reviews online, from singing it praises to dragging it through the mud... I have never understood why such discrepancy..

Snobbery?

The problem is that factory ammo is the same as our precious homeloads.....some rounds work better in some rifles.

I have no complaints about 6.5 x 55 and a friend of mine has no complaints about .270 ...in fact he even retrieved a few bullets to show the expansion.

Use what suits your rifle and what you are comfortable with!

I can't comment on effectiveness for hunting but I've heard of lots of people who have used them satisfactorily.

I have tried a box of 20 PPU 130gr SP through my Tikka 270 (22" barrel). I recorded roughly 2870fps over chronograph and 1" groups at 100m.

So well put. PPU has become increasingly available in my neck of the woods so people are using it. Seems to works fine. Additionally, PPU components are available and I use quite a few of their bullets loaded in their brass. If bullet performance is the meter you measure, they work well. I have taken some bigish deer (considered very big compared to your local species) with 7mm and 30 cal varieties and they all died on the spot. Bullet performance was on par with Sierra Game Pro or Speer Hot Cor. ~Muir

Up until I started reloading, myself and friend both used 50 and 55gr ppu in 222 rifles and it was a great round. under an inch at 100 yards and never really went above 200 yards with the ppu but none of the foxes or roe complained about them. I think as mentioned above a bit of snobbery comes into it and some guns probably wont shoot them accurately but I cant complain about them through personal experience.

thanks for the feed back guys,

I am still trying out different ammo in my rifle so I try all sorts when I come across it, so far she likes them all...

I have also heard a lot about them , prior to actually using them for myself.
Some good news about them, and some bad.
I use them , and find them really accurate . But after the darkness of this historic - day , the price may not be so appealing.

Used them in .22-250 & .25-06 & 1" to 2" accuracy ... Not as good as home loads but fine hunting ... Brass no problems for reloading ... My thoughts on them were I thought they didn't expand as well
... ( only ever used on roe)
& I had a few beast run & just pinhole exits
Others I know very happy
Price wise really good

IVe used them in my 243 and 308 on fallow. They dont mushroom at all. They break up into bits. Ive had runners. Dont use anymore or will use again.
Fine if your punching holes in paper.

May I ask what bullets etc you used in 7mm and .30?

I use it in 6.5 no deer have ever complained so I carn't . what I have had concern with is lead free of another make going straight through roe in 243 calibre.

Used to shoot them through my .308 and they were OK 2" groups at 100yards. But tried them a few times in my 30-06 and never ever again, pure utter dirt and that's not snobbery that's fact. I was shooting them after som Sako ammo and the gent next to me could tell when I swapped, the BOOm out of them was like a Howitzer and the muzzle flash extended past 6 foot out the barrel and most importantly they grouped like **** some where in the region of 6-10 inches @100yrds.
the guy at the range reckoned he opened a few rounds and found different bullets, different powder etc in the same batch.
but no harm in trying them and if your Rifle shoots them ok your on to a lucky one and some cheap shooting.

Used in a .25-06 and were awful. No expansion at all.

Used in 9.3x62 and killed ok.

Prefer quality ammo and confidence in having the cleanest kill possible

I bought them to shoot at the range as they are cheap, but obviously wanted to know if they were decent on live game,
I generally use different ammo for hunting, which is obviously too expensive to use for an afternoon shooting paper...
interestingly enough the disparity in experiences with the ammunition continues. the only consensus I can find is that its pretty dirty...

Its obviously not RWS or any other top brand and their website has no info on bullet construction, ballistics testing etc

maybe if I find the time I will cook a batch of ballistics gel but until then... I guess theres only really one way to find out. having bought some I will use them and add my testimony.

cheers
a.

A chap I met on a DSC course recently bought some PPU in .308, 2 boxes, none of which would chamber, moral of the story... if you buy PPU check to see if they chamber correctly!

+1 I have used 6.5x55 in three rifles two i still have and no problems with ppu ammo

I have tried 90 and 100gr in my .243 but group sizes were around 1.5in/100m. Tried the 150gr in my .308 and it is sub inch without even trying. Shot everything from fox to red deer and they always dropped. Happy to use them on the range as well as deer in my .308. Drop at 200m was only 1.5in. For their price and performance, I'm not complaining. Shame my .243 doesnt group better with them. Incidentally, I also homeload for both but still tend to use the PPU in the .308 without qualms.
