SA trophy

Hi guys, i'm after a bit of information if anyone can help please. I shot some trophies in SA last year and i'm only having the skulls sent to the UK, dipped and packed, as this was the cheapest option for me. I have been told they will be checked by a vet when they arrive in the uk. Has anyone done it this way and was there any additional costs or would anyone know where I could find out any information about this. Thanks.

It is standard when they come into the UK. There are a whole host of costs you need to pay including duty and lower rate VAT, then shipment to your house. You will also be paying various costs in SA as well as the flight.
Martin Aries at Rainbow will sort it out for you.
Be prepared for a hole in your wallet.

Had a few shipments last few years, if the vet checks them in the uk or over seas they don't inspect them that closely as had zebra skins missing ..... funny that.... ,also the crates were sealed and had not been opened uk side so just another money spinner IMO...

Totally correct. I have been importing crates with up to 100 items in for years and not one has ever been opened. As long as the paperwork is correct it gets through.

Shipping and packing costs seem to be going through the roof in Africa. Many of the taxidermists over there don't like loosing trade to over seas people. All the PH's are on a percentage with the taxidermists, plus I have seen some horrendous work some years back where the taxidermists in Africa had sprayed the capes with neat formaldehyde and completely ruined the skins. There is no way they will relax and tan once this has been done to them.

Gavin Mills at Kent Logistics is also a good contact to ship in trophies.

You can always ship the skins over dried and get them mounted one at a time over here, as and when you can afford them. Plus shipping flat skins is a lot cheaper. This dipping charge is a joke really, all they generally do is dust them over with insecticide. Shields you can purchase from Ian Kirby over here, he makes some top quality shields in solid wood or MDF veneered.

I had a delivery from the Eastern Cape in December.

2 Zebra skins
1 Nyala skin
1 Baboon skin
1 Baboon skull
1 Nyala skull and horns
1 Busbuck skull and horns
1 Wathog skull and tusks

All sent dip and pack from dropping off at the taxidermist to delivery in Leicestershire total cost £2240
