Cuckoo

Thought I heard one in the distance this weekend but saw and heard two this morning about 05.30 whilst out with the dogs. One flew along a hedgeline about 15 yards away. They were very vocal and active but as noted already quite late this year. Very still, humid and overcast in East Lincolnshire.

Just back from a week fishing the upper Avon and the Wylye. The mayfly were hatching in their hundreds and the trout were rising freely a Cuckoo started calling and stayed with us along the river all day, at dusk we saw a Barn Owl catching rodents and feeding it's young across the fields from us. What more could you want, the whole week was like that. The best fish we caught were 4lbs one each, although we both got broken twice by larger fish there were plenty more to keep us occupied, 7 on the last evening, last year we even heard Nightjars on the same stretch of river.
A very big thank you once again to Wylyetom. See you later on the Fallow.

I heard one in the Cotswold water park last week and another on Weds whilst at the West Midland Shooting ground at Hodnet.

I heard a Cuckoo here on the Isle of Wight at the start of May and again last weekend when I was fishing on the Frome in Dorset. There were very few fish around and they didn't appear to be feeding at all, despite loads of Mayfly hatching and dead on the water.

Stalking along a ride listening to one this morning and thinking to myself I've heard cuckoos but never actual seen one. Minutes later it flew 10 feet over our heads, sat on top of the tree next to us, then swooped down and proceeded to mate with a female sitting on a fence post 10 yards away. Seems it read my mind and thought it would put on a bit of a show!
