The Black Dot of Doom 2017 - back to haunt us.

Sorry, not trying to detract from the post. I was genuinely interested in how some of those small groups were achieved.

I'm off stalking tmrw evening so will take my BDOD sheets along with me as it will still be light when I leave.

Off a bipod prone its perfectly doable

Personaly the only place I am likely to use a bipod prone is open hill stalking long range. I have only ever shot 1 deer using a bipod in that way and it was 175m

Ill be doing my test from the high seat (243) and standing with sticks (308) which is 99.99% of my stalking covered

Id be happy with 1.5" groups from the seat (head shot) and 4" groups from sticks (heart & lung shot)

New rifle inbound. Will use the BDOD as one of its first tests.

The Black Dot of Doom meets the Black Rifle of Doom..........

What can go wrong?

100m standing off sticks with the 6mm. Not hard to better that!

There does seem to be something about the black dot that results in things not quite going to plan. In saying that you've shot what is probably about an average sized group - in the field people might shoot a smaller group but averaged over a good number of rounds your group is a realistic reflection of what almost everyone can expect, especially off sticks. The key is to remember this, and I think most people who take on the black dot realize this, and not start believing that the smallest group you've ever shot is your average :-)

Cheers, it's good actually do this practice. It will probably get me to it more often after a stalking outing etc. Helps me to know my limits too - my trigger control is not always perfect so can work on that.

Slightly different take on the BDOD.....

new rifle, other than proof house it was unfired. Gave it a clean then off to zero scope with the BDOD.

106m prone off bipod. Bore sighted.

First shot was bore sighted and proved to be high & left, clickety-click and other two were ok (pic is on its side)

Will have a more "ethical" go later!

If the first shot is the fowler from a new rifle, you might have a shooter there Jock. john

Managed to rattle off these before the afternoon match and while not what I'd hoped for at least the time restraint ensured a degree of in-the-field urgency:

Ok couldent see the point of bipod prone because I virtualy never shoot that way on live targets so first one is High seat 100m and second off sticks 100m

Quite pleased but the third shot (the low one) off sticks was a bit disappointing.

DSC training at 100m with a .243 Mauser M12 using Federal 100gr.

Right is off bipod zero, left is off a trigger stick.

Exactly the same factory round I use in my M12 Max and it does half inch all day off a bipod. Lovely shooting rifle. Reeks of affordable quality.

I keep meaning to do this BDOD thing off my single hazel stick but find myself reaching for the hummer at the moment for evening rabbit sniping.

Come on folks give it a crack.

The way I put it to myself. You get an invite didn't expect and need to have confidence in your ability and rifle.

bdod.webpout trying to keep the rooks off the barley this evening, hate going to the dentist so could not think of a more fitting end for this envelope than the bdod.

Howa 1500, s&b 8x56, quad monkey sticks, standing, .243, hornady custom 100gr BTSP.

I did a quick count of the 3 shot attempts at a single black dot on a white page without any other markings. I think there have been 11 attempts at the black dot (I'm not counting the images I posted as they were previous attempts and I posted them only as pump primers, plus photobucket has now removed them) with 5 good hits from the 33 rounds fired. Again I used my definition of a "good" hit, other definitions are available and just as valid.

The group sizes, numbers of hits, and very low numbers of people actually willing to take on the challenge, are all in keeping with past performances on this target and provide a lot of information, especially to the beginner, when considering accuracy in the field and, also, claims of accuracy you see on the internet.
