Barn owl landed on my head

Fairly late on last night a barn owl was hunting up a track coming towards me
Approx 10 yards away he saw something turned hovered momentarily then came behind me landed on my head
Luckily I had a hat on

Its not all about killing deer

Beats me. I had One land on a branch above me and we both eyed each other up. Then another time had a hawk slap me on the head. Think he was coming in to land on me then realised I wasn't a tree.

Great isn't it! :D

Had a grey tree rat climb over my shoulder and bag which was at my side whilst in the high seat on its way along a line of oak trees it did not even notice me?

BC..

I've had it happen twice, once while in a high seat and the other whilst on the top of a Land Rover, both times whilst squeaking foxes. Took my hat off on both occasions. You really can't hear the buggers coming!!!

Had a barn owl fly down the beam of my lamp like a bomber in a searchlight while calling in a fox with a wam caller...keeper was on the rifle lining up the shot as the owl just skimmed over my head as it realised its mistake....totally silent as it passed....Hugh

I had a Barn Owl land on my moderator last year. It struggled to cling on as my rifle was pointing in the same direction that the owl was facing. After a few seconds of fluttering to gain balance it flew away totally unaware of my presence.

Once, when I was a schoolboy, I was out roost shooting pigeons in an old coppice with my air rifle, proudly wearing a new ghillie-suit-type hat and cape I'd made for myself. I must have blended in too well, or stood too still, because not long after I took up position under my favourite tree, I had a tawny owl land on my head. Of course I -and the owl- had something of a surprise. I jumped, and it flew off... with my prized hat hooked in its talons. The hat did fall off, but in the biggest, thickest patch of brambles there was, so I had to go back the next evening with my fishing rod.

Watching owls with a thermal is a revelation There are far more barn owls about than people think and they come to electronic fox callers very well.

On normal mode the wings and body are black and only the head is white (hot) it is great watching them and they will hunt very close to you, possibly because the small rodents you disturb.

D

Glad you are safe. As I remember, we actually had a fatality in the states back around 1980 from an owl. The predator caller was wearing a rabbit fur hat and the owl talon ex him through the temple as I remember the story.

Myself, I have had great horned owls land above me several times while predator calling, and always make sure I have a backstop in the form of a tree or fence post.

My stalking mate saw a red squirrel running along a track before it ran straight up his leg, stopping at his crotch, took a look round then jumped off and carried on along the track.

Had them hover 6ft or so above when out duck flight I got, having a look ....they are as said totally silent
