here's one with a pump just remove the water pump add a gearbox and pulley and job done, I have knocked one up just need to machine a pulley up then i am a runner

I'm not sure on your requirements but I bought a maasdam rope pulled in the states, they are available here occasionally at a hugely inflated price, it's like the Tirfor principle except using 1/2 inch rope instead of cable, slow but only limited to the length of the rope used, and weighs about 3.5 kilos. Might be worth a look?

Bolting a reduction box on is easy enough, but what are you doing about a clutch ?

AFAIK that's correct. No clutch and you operate it by rope tension on the pulley.

A clutch is a handy safety feature , and probably required on commercially available capstans, but as you will be using both hands to pull in the rope, who is going to opperate the clutch ????
as you said 2 or 3 wraps from bottom of drum then all you need to do is release pressure and the rope slips acting as your clutch, if you dont want to go to all the trouble of making your own, a normal 4x4 winch will work on the same principle just remove the winch wire and you have what is efect a capstan drum ready to add rope

I'm sure I read a post on a NZ hunting forum about a guy who made one similar to your idea Mereside, he used an auger which has a reduction gearbox and built a frame round it, it looked good and he said it worked well for deer. Yours looks a great project, I'd love to see more pics of the build and hear how it turns out.

Would a srimmer/brushcutter power head be a good starting point for making ur own?

Will already have a clutch built in but don't know I would be powerful enough but u'd still need a gearbox attached somehow

It will work great i have seen one similar so I know the concept works, i will make a smaller one to carry after this one, fitting the gearbox is easy to the shaft as you get the couplings cheap which are rubber bushed and fit both engine and gearbox and can match each shaft dia, i will post pics when I find another hosting site no Photobucket is fubar

Braided rope will be lighter for strength than twisted strand rope, will not stretch as much, and will not cause as much damage if it breaks, if it ever does. The draw rope that overhead cable installers use, would be good, but possibly a lot stronger than is needed.

Clutch on the one the fishing club had is centrifugal, cut the revs back and it disengages.
Should the engine stop in use, you can tie the rope off to hold the load, but without a clutch the engine will not restart.
Pretty sure the 35cc Honda powered ones will have the very same clutch the strimmer it came from has.

They work fine, a pal of mine made a winch from a strimmer and used a reduction gearbox from a treadmill, it works a treat but wont sell it to me ......scumbag.I'll try and put a picture up.
