Cheap Rifle. Odd Rifle. Superb accuracy.

My good friend MTLEADFARMER has always had an eye for a bargain so when he found these rifles
th

on sale at the Ranch Supply store for $190 he send me a picture of his new purchase... which prompted me to drive the 50 miles into town to buy one of my own. The rifle is German-made ISSC Mk22 copy of a SKAR in 22LR. These rifles, until the recent downturn in the US gun market, have retailed for $345 to $499. In this case the Ranch Supply store had been selling them for $299. Accordingly, this $190 price was a bargain from any aspect provided it worked, of course. The Internet reviews were good so it was with not too much trepidation that I completed the sale and took my new gun home. I mounted the folding stock and the sights. What a strange rifle! Still, it has some nice features like cheekpiece you can elevate for scope work, an adjustable buttstock, and six mounting positions for the cocking handle: three on each side. If is shot reasonably well it would make a good truck rifle. The next day I headed for the range.

The Net Commandos were saying that CCI Mini Mag was the best ammo to run through this rifle but I used Aguila HV 40 grain. I went to the range the next morning with my bag of factory supplied accessory tools tucked into the grip. It was rainy and wet. My first two rounds off hand at 25 yards were cutting each other, four inched low and two inches right. I fired three more into inch and a quarter. The trigger was like a slushy 2-stage but controllable. I made some sight adjustments and fired a few, another set of adjustments and fired a few more. The bullets seemed to be going right where they were aimed -or at least to where the front sight was when the trigger broke. In 20 rounds there had been no malfunctions or stoppages.

Finally I was pretty much zeroed so I touched a small diamond from a Leupold sight-in target to the top of the front sight and fired 5 off hand. Three touching and the whole group under 1 inch. Huh! I moved to 50 yards and loaded 20 rounds into the magazine, and emptied them into a target at a fairly brisk rate, standing. Three and three-quarter inches with fourteen in a roughly two inch cluster. I was out of ammo and starting to feel better about this purchase.

Today MTLEADFARMER and I went out so he could zero his rifle. Once the combat sights were zeroed he mounted a Vortex 4-12 on top with an AR mount. He walked the rounds into the bull with the turrets and then drove 5 rounds atop each other off an Atlas bipod. Then he did it again on a different bull: maybe quarter inch CTC? Suddenly these rifles went from 'throw away' class weapons to a serious bit of shooting gear. I got on line and ordered 8 extra magazines to divide between us.

Anyhow, these rifles were an unexpected bright spot on my rainy weekend. I don't know if they have kits for sub sonic rounds but for a quasi military auto loader, you could do worse.~Muir

Good to hear about the accuracy, as that is a fancy .22 LR !
I like all these .22 military training rifles - SIG, Colt, Ruger AR15, S&W MP 15-22, HK. Some are better than others.

The real SCAR is a nice rifle, but over $2,500, and they make them just a few miles from my home.
I have a S&W MP 15-22 and love it. Very accurate with Federal blue box.
As for messing with it, tricking it out, the tactical clones - especially the AR15 clones - offer as many third-party aftermarket parts as the Ruger 10/22.

There is little for this Mk22. An adapter for suppression, that is about it. I'm sure the S&Ws have a bevy of bolt on trinkets.

While MTLEADFARMER was zeroing his rifle, I was flicking pebbles off of the berm. Really a very accurate rifle. The barrels are advertised as Lothar Walther Match. Seems to shoot like it.~Muir

For $200, and shooting like that, the only trinket it needs is a .22 scope like the Nikon P-22 or Bushnell AR 22.
I am going to check for around here today. Thanks for the heads up!

Nice experience write up, Muir. Just had a look over here and these MK22s are between £400 ($520) and £650 ($845)!!

Thanks for that! I need to grab some more magazines for my S&W M&P 15-22.

Retail on that SCAR clone is $525, and most prices are $399 to $445.00, but I have found them as low as $299.
I am going to keep looking. Maybe that place in Montana will ship me one for $190.00. Hmmmm.

Some of the fellows on here recommended the Visionking AR 1-4x24 scope with illuminated do and circle in a German # 1 reticle, which looks pretty cool for $78.00.

I just put a Hawke 2-7x32AO mil dot scope the MP 15-22, and am looking at a Bushnell AR optic 3-9x40 BDC for $75.00. I am thinking of putting a 1-4x or 1-6x24 on both S&Ws, the 15-22 and the 5.56mm, for the sake of practice.

From what I can tell, that ISSC MK22 is engineered by ISSC but built in Austria, probably by Walther, because Anschutz sells it under their brand, too, and they insist on accuracy.

Question for Muir and MTLEADFARMER:

Are the sights on that MK22 Magpul flip ups?
How is the sight picture for you? ( Must be pretty good, from the small groups, right? :) )

I find the Magpuls on a carbine to have too small an aperture for me, with the front sight that much closer.

I bought another set of Magpuls at a gun show for $20.00, and think I am going to drill out the rear hole to the same size as the USGI small aperture on the A2 and try that.

My S&W M&P 15 Scout came with a Magpul rear and fixed A2 front.
My M&P 15-22 came with removable GI aluminum front and rear sights. Right now, the .22 wears a Magpul set.

They are polymer but not MagPul. There are two apertures: One small and one large. You can flip up or down as needed. I might take a drill and open up the smaller one just a touch as my eyes aren't what they used to be.:???:~Muir

Tho depending on the back ground, I had no problems with the smaller one now that I think of it.

I mentioned the small set of tools that come with the Mk22. I replaced the pins in the lower with HK small push pins and while I had the trigger group off, I pulled the bolt. Contrary to some of the You-Tube jabber, the only tools you need come with the gun. I am pretty impressed....~Muir
