Basic smart phones for numpties

Is there such a thing as a 'basic' smart phone for a complete numpty (me) ideally with a key pad.
Really not wanting to go down the route of touch screen phones but would also need to be pretty hard wearing

In the past I've had a few of the Samsung rough phones and quite liked them and was thinking of getting an other, but mibee it's time to join the smart phone age. At the moment working with a cheap nokia that doesnae even do smileys never mind photos or owt else
Plus the local estate is wanting to link all the syndicates/keepers and stalkers up with a 'whats app'

I take it u do need a smart phone to get 'apps' or would a Samsung type phone also be able to use apps?

Cheers and sorry for such stupid questions but this whole technology thing has just passed me by, if I thought I could ignore it any longer I would but sadly its not going to go away.

I'm not sure smart phones with physical keypads are even available anymore. I've not seen one for years. IMO touch screen is the way to go for a smartpone, way easier to actually use the functionality. If you get on with Samsungs then something like a Galaxy S5 or similar would do everything you need and are reasonable(ish) money now. I've had mine for 4 years and with a decent case they are pretty hard wearing. Waterproof too which helps. Some people like Iphones, and the software is good so they are easy to use, but I don't rate the actual hardware and everyone I know who has one has a broken screen. I'm also not willing to pay the 'apple premium' which they bung on all their products.

I should add the Samsung's I had were just the basic extra tough phones, just a normal keypad and a camera.

I think hey done the internet but the few times I tried it I got bored waiting for it to get a page and turned it off

Borrowed a lads phone on a shoot on sat to check something on internet and took me an age to try and type something,

Do u need a smart phone to do 'apps'or would any 3g type phone be able to do them.

Yeah, it's basically a requirement I'm afraid. Some of them, such as WhatsApp, are pretty useful though. You get used to touch screen and most will find its a fair bit quicker than an old phone type keyboard or even a mini qwerty one like the old blackberry. Plus there are advantages for web browsing etc.

Smart phones aren't all that complicated to use their basic functions, such as making calls, sending texts and WhatsApp, which really is just another type of text messaging. Sure, they can do a lot more, such as taking photos (useful), working as a satnav, taking videos, finding the location of other phone users, playing games, turning your heating on and off, I could go on. But I don't know anyone who uses all the functionality of their smartphone. Just use the bits you find useful. Once you do things once, it's easy-peasy and ignore the rest.

I use Samsung and find them brilliant. The one thing I would advise is the size of some of the newer phone's is getting so they won't fit in your front trouser pocket without crushing your jewels. The are easier to read but what a price to pay. Haha

Blackberry all the way. I've tried i-phones & just ended up chucking them in a drawer as the battery life & reception was so useless. I find the screen typing very difficult & far prefer a physical keyboard too. My most recent phone is the Blackberry Keyone & the battery life is remarkable; I use it very heavily indeed & it's never turned off & it would comfortably go for 2 days before even thinking about needing charged. Get the shop to set it up for you though.

Whichever phone you choose, get a case for it!

Must admit I'm mibee thinking a smart phone isn't for me
I was struggling to work my nokia this morning, trying to push the middle bit of 1 of those 4 direction key things,

I'm also used to battery life lasting a week or 2 never mind only a day.

Must admit I don't really understand why anyone would need to turn there heating on with a phone, can't u just put a timer on it.
If ur heating system is modern enough to work with it good chance ur house will also be fairly well insulated and probably not actually that cold anyway

Whatever you get as said above get a good case for it, I had an i phone in a griffin survivor case and after 2 years it still looked like new.

I struggle with them too, the charging is the one thing that gets me, my samsung rough phone lasts for a week at minimum between charges and is great at receiving texts and phone calls - it's a phone. It's been dropped in mud and puddles, ran over ny the landrover and rattled around the back of a pickup. Still works perfectly, still sends and receives texts and phone calls. It does have a camera and my contract is £8 a month including calls and texts.

Smart phone contracts are outrageosly expensive, the battery life short and the build flimsy - why would you want one ?

Another old git here who uses a Samsung tough type phone. About £5 a month and does everything i want it to do and thats not a lot :-D.

Aye miki that's pretty much all I want the phone for, so would be quite happy with another Samsung ruff phone, its just the estates wanting to set up a wots app group to help communication.
If Samsung or similar could get odd app's I'd be laughing.

I'm on a sim fre contract so just got to buy the thing.
Worst thing is I'm not even that old, but just missed out on the whole computer thing
