Shooting with wrong mod (results)

Not got round to picking up parts for my 308,got one on the 6,5,thanks for posting,ps have you ever chased a neoprene mod cover off a 308 they dont half fly!
Not half as far as a loose mod! .... one of our hallowed no longer with us(bless him), was the firer of what in effect was a “Baton round” @ Monmouth first tunnel range deer shoot in support of H4H...... so missed fella!, wish you were still with us Pete.:tiphat:

Please don’t be put off it's a great setup, just be careful unlike me, I did see the same result as I got at Martin Nettleton shop at Martlesham suffolk, the importance of this post is this, I had seen it before but I still got caught out, I and others are proof that accidents do and will happen.

2nd this, don’t be put off.

I’ve had this setup for years, it’s the best mod I’ve ever used and I’ve used a lot, quiet, light, strip it down to clean, one mod fits all my rifles (different baffles) and the supplier is first rate and always helpful.

As long as you pay attention to the baffle colour you won’t be disappointed.

Its very unfortunate what happend to John and let’s be honest, we’ve all made mistakes.

Jeff.

Good post - very considerate to pass on a safety moment.

I use the same Aimsonic mod for three rifles .308, 6.5x55 and .223 - its a .30 cal. Is there much benefit in matching a mod for the .223? If I got another Aimsonic for it, I would get the camo version, so its completely different. Too stingy to do so at the moment.

I would like to thank Wildcat Moderators for contacting me about my mistake and the concern they had for me and their product. Also a big thank you for helping me with getting set up again with some replacement parts free:-D It is testament to their product that nobody was injured, it held together safely through my stupidity, and that a great British company has come to the rescue, keep it bling:british:

That is a lovely outcome. What a great advert. Also, glad you are OK: I bet you got a bit of a fright, eh? Thanks for sharing as I would much rather learn from other people's experience than from my own...so much safer...

Great outcome first class company to deal with, start building my confidence back now, a bit of a scare.

Just a thought. Someone else mentioned laser engraving. Perhaps wildcat could engrave on the end of the baffle stack the calibre designation eg <30 or <224 as in suitable for 30 calibre and under and 224 and under. May save some confusion. Colour coding is also good but you also have some people that are colour blind.

ditto. And I have different makes of mod for each calibre.[two rifles share same threading, so physically different look is useful discriminator]

Surely having one mod with a big enough diameter for all your rifles is the safest set-up of all? It might involve a slight compromise in sound reduction etc. with the smaller cals., but there's zero risk of mounting a mod with a diameter that's too small for the rifle it's going onto.

I would love the techies on this forum to put a db value on a .17HMR or .223 run through a .30 mod. I suspect the difference in performance wrt a calibre matched mod is non-trivial. No argument that having one large calibre mod is definitely a safe option. However, my fox and rabbit management takes place on land where neighbouring houses are close by. The landowner has had zero complaints so far. I am happy to have a tailored solution that keeps it that way.

You could well be right. I currently use the same (6.5 Hausken jd224) mod on a .223 and a 6.5x55, so there wouldn't be such a massive difference in bore. Another fail-safe solution which wouldn't compromise on sound reduction would be to have a specific mod, but each with a different thread, for each rifle. (Maybe this was suggested already?)
