Capreolus club

So, I have recently stumbled across an old artical about the Capreolus club and wondered if any have had dealings with them / are members.

One of the key benefits appears to be 'free' stalking, however, I can imagine this has a very tight cap per member.

Just after general thoughts.

I looked at joining, £800 a year in 4 instalments. I’m unsure if that gives you unguided stalks or not, but you don’t get to keep the meat unless you pay 1.20/lb.
They were fairly pushy with me but seemed to latch onto me needing an FAC and use that as a selling point. Which I have come very close to doing as I currently only have 9 acres of permission.

9 acres is fine for a FAC application, if it is safe to shoot there and there is something to shoot at!

Pros: it is run by pleasant and knowledgable people; it is a subset of County Deer Stalking which has some interesting videos online; it does help with the justifying of one's licence; there are some cull days (but this year I have only been invited to one); there are some club meets such as at Christmas, normally at a fairly up market St James's club; there are chargeable hunts that members can go on in the UK, Europe and Africa. The club has some large grounds near Gatwick and near Salisbury. It is upmarket and posh without being snobby.

Cons: fairly pricey for what it is; the cull days don't really cover the subscriptions; it is probably possible to find cheaper trips booking direct.

If you are relatively new to stalking, it well be may be worth considering, although I believe that it is invitation only. So, one would need to establish a rapport with the team there by booking with County Deer Stalking first.

If you are more experienced and / or have your own Permissions, it may be less valuable.

I am under the impression I won’t get much more than .22.

@NewForester thank you for your input, I have been invited to join, but have been mulling it over for a week or so.

If there's deer on your 9 acres (or if there's deer in the area and your permission includes the right to control deer ;)) then you have "good reason" for something bigger than a 22.

When I applied for my FAC I had no ground of my own - It was all paid outings and trips away. If you're looking for a good reason to be granted an FAC I would highly recommend dropping folks like SikaMalc a line and getting some paid stalking booked, plus do your DSC1.

With some paid stalking under your belt, some outings booked, your DSC1 and the ground you have already you should be well set.

My .308 slot is currently for target only and I'm looking to get this changed to include the standard condition about legal quarry. I've been going on booked stalks with their weapon and have booked my DSC1.

So I spoke to the FEO about a variation and he said that without a permission they would only change it to "booked stalks only" and when I get a permission I will require another variation.

Have you heard of that before?

Nope! That sounds like nonsense to me, I would challenge that.

If you have stalks booked they should just add on the deer/AOLQ condition (most likely on a closed ticket to start with) and be done with it IMO. Thats what I had.

Yes I have.
It has recently been applied to my shooting companion when he renewed his fac, and, since he has no current permissions, it correctly reflects the circumstances at the time of renewal.
I expect the same wording when I renew later this year and have no problems with it (but, unlike him, I will put forward a case for retaining my open condition)

Had a small encounter with County Deer and they seemed more interested in MY ground so gave a wide berth. They do make interesting YouTube films, however they are a little staged and scripted not mention some of the characters in them. Aimed at the complete novice is the feeling I get. Not that that’s a bad thing.
Each to there own and the club part looks a sociable affair if that’s what you’re after.

It doesn't seem like the smartest move on their part. If anything creates more work for the stretched FEO's.

On the case for having an open condition can you not jsut use BASC's stalking schemes as a 'permission' as you are required to solo Stalk.

They look like they cater for a certain market. Ok if that's your thing. £800 would buy a lot of paid stalks. If had a "paid stalking" condition on my FAC I would be contacting BDS or BASC and seeking advice.

Sorry I don't get the angst about having paid stalks as a condition.
If it's what you do at the time of application it's what you do AT THAT TIME
I doubt any FLD will issue an open condition on speculation that you might/possibly/may in the future have permissions.

How does the "paid stalking" condition improve public safety? You are either deemed suitable to hold a particular calibre to shoot deer or you are not. You are either deemed suitable to determine whether the land is safe for a particular calibre or it is the the responsibility of the Chief Constable. If anything I think paid stalking would be justification for an open condition, by its very nature. A lot of the time the police interpret legislation as they see fit.

Paid stalking is generally 100% accompanied- paying a mate a few quid/ buying him a pint to let you shoot alone on his permission is not.
The outfitter guides you, confirms the target and makes the final decision on the shot.
If you are in a high seat you might get to sit alone, but the seat will have been positioned to minimise risk, you will have been briefed
on arcs of fire and, what actions you may take so that means it will not be a decision you make fully on your own, it has been supervised.
Therefore paid stalking is - perhaps- more correctly, supervised stalking

You seem to be missing the point. You could be doing a paid stalk with the safest best guide in the business but if his ground has not been cleared by police and you have a closed fac then you cannot use your rifle.
