9 acres is fine for a FAC application, if it is safe to shoot there and there is something to shoot at!
I am under the impression I won’t get much more than .22.
@NewForester thank you for your input, I have been invited to join, but have been mulling it over for a week or so.

When I applied for my FAC I had no ground of my own - It was all paid outings and trips away.
My .308 slot is currently for target only and I'm looking to get this changed to include the standard condition about legal quarry. I've been going on booked stalks with their weapon and have booked my DSC1.
So I spoke to the FEO about a variation and he said that without a permission they would only change it to "booked stalks only" and when I get a permission I will require another variation.
Have you heard of that before?

Yes I have.
It has recently been applied to my shooting companion when he renewed his fac, and, since he has no current permissions, it correctly reflects the circumstances at the time of renewal.
I expect the same wording when I renew later this year and have no problems with it (but, unlike him, I will put forward a case for retaining my open condition)
Paid stalking is generally 100% accompanied- paying a mate a few quid/ buying him a pint to let you shoot alone on his permission is not.
The outfitter guides you, confirms the target and makes the final decision on the shot.
If you are in a high seat you might get to sit alone, but the seat will have been positioned to minimise risk, you will have been briefed
on arcs of fire and, what actions you may take so that means it will not be a decision you make fully on your own, it has been supervised.
Therefore paid stalking is - perhaps- more correctly, supervised stalking
