Scotland - long dry summer and the rut ?

.

From a newbie - and sorry if it's already been asked / discussed - if Scotland has had a very long dry summer how will this typically affect the rut (if at all) ?

Cheers

Which rut Red? Don't think it will no longer hot and dry and a hint of Autumn in the air in the early mornings

Many places will have less stags to cull though due to heavy winter mortality.

bogtrotter, yes reds. We are in Scotland in a week for 4 days and I was wondering what affect a dry summer has
- if at all - on the typical rut. If anything can be classed as typical nowadays!

cheers

Afraid you are a bit early for the rut, usually starts about last week September, a few frosty nights could bring it on earlier ,hope you are lucky.

As Bogtrotter has mentioned, too early yet for the Red rut.
Long hot summer will make little if no difference in my opinion, it might have helped younger beasts after the terrible winter months, to put on some weight. But the Red rut does not start to get under way until late September, and is usually well under way by about 6to 8th October. However much depends on the hinds coming into season and the colder nights and shortening of the days is also a big part of the whole rut.

Sika will usually start a bit earlier in September, but they can have a protracted rut which can extend sometimes into December, although usually the more mature stags are finished by late October with only the younger stags still whistling now and then. Again colder nights and shortening daylight hours plus the hinds coming into season will all play a part.
