DIY Chiller

Rapid cycling shortens lifespans significantly, so it's not entirely old school myth, however a fridge or freezer typically has a thermostat which kicks in & out many times per day, so turning off every week or two is irrelevant.
If not being used, turning it off will save you power & probably prolong the life of the fridge. Or it might make it stink of course

You can always fill it with beer in between deer, it sounds almost the same and makes good use of the cold temperature.... and saves the issue of a smelly fridge too... win win!

Why not wire the fan in to the switched side of the thermostat, so fan only comes on when compressor is running. That way it will work just as much as the compressor is and remain static the rest of the time. Save you remembering to open the door etc.

The best way to stop it stinking when not in use is to leave the door open or ajar, i work in refrigerated transport hire and when we have Vans stood up for any length of time we secured the doors open to stop it stinking otherwise they always smell mouldy/musty.

As kevgun said

When off & not n use leave door ajar .... I always clean down with antibacterial spray then prop door open with a metal chest spreader ... only open 2” or 3” but never had smell

A fan for a computer works just fine, but there has to be a vent.....a wee hole at the bottom of the front door, and a hole at the top, fan in the middle.....job done.

It is a total mith that opening the door lets moisture out when the fridge is running, outside humidity 60% inside with the fridge running 30% how the hell is opening the door going to reduce moisture.
A fan is the second most important thing to reduce moisture, the first thing is to make sure the condensation drain hole is clear, every fridge has one.

IF ANYONE REQUIRES INFORMATION ABOUT FRIDGE PROBLEMS PM ME I HAVE HELPED 40 or 50 PEOPLE ON HERE WITH THERE FRIDGE PROBLEMS INCLUDING THE OWNERS WELL AT LEAST SIKAMALC AND I DONT CHARGE FOR INFORMATION AND MOST PROBLEMS CAN BE DIAGNOSED OVER THE PHONE.

Sorry to shout but I get a bit fed up of people giving information that is not correct, I know they are trying to help but it sometimes makes things worse.

Info please.
Should I put Ventilation mesh/holes in the door of the fridge top and bottom?
I am putting a fan in the fridge.

Out of season my chiller and fridge have the doors wedged open to allow air to circulate, never had any problems.
