What knives are people using?

I have an Outdoor edge Swing blade and a EKA swing blade as a spare.

Look very simila but IMHO the Outdoor edge has a better profile for skinning its probably my imagination, but I think it holds its edge longer.

They do everything except tunnleing for which they are too short and too fat. I use a conventional boning knife for that. I used to have a cheep 40.00 Victorianox which was perfect but flashed some cash on a Dlastron just because it looked sexy.

I would spend 400 on an Emberleaf, but Id want three of them and I wont spend 1200.

Id want the standard for general cutting and skinning, the Garon for tunnelling and a gutting blade.

I use a Mora and Eka Swingblade. Like them both.

I have an Outdoor Edge folding replaceable blade and although I like the concept and the shape blades, I think that there is a problem with the design because where I put my thumb is where the button to release the blade. I have lost a couple of blades this way and don't use it any more.

Anyone come across Blue Mountain Forge? SALE! Custom made hunting and camping knife! BARGAIN!

Eka swingblade works for me
I was firmly a strong supporter of the EKA swingblade, however it has been reduced to a backup knife in the bottom of the Roe sack, main reason is the recess where the other blade sits collects blood and fat and is near impossible to clean of in the field, so when you move onto your 2nd and 3rd animal the risk of cross contamination is quite high.
Mora or any other Stainless knife with a plastic handle is easy to quickly clean with a spereate tripe knife.
In the kitchen it is the Wilkinson and Sword boning knife, razor sharp and holds an edge very well.

+1 for Mora - orange handle just in case you drop it. Keeps edge, sharpens easily is stainless steel and most important - CHEAP!

I love the fact that the humble mora is very clearly the winner despite the hype over premium blades. Value for money I thinks it’s punching well above its weight and has probably seen more uk deer gralloched than anything else!

Maybe I'll go against the flow. Nothing new there then. I have a Mora and quite honestly cant see the draw of them. It can't keep an edge if and when I do manage to get one on its blade. Sites in the cupboard unloved and unused for its poor blade.

The Casstrom, EKA and Normark hold good edges I find and a combination of them is what I use. None more expensive than about £70.00 but you can keep your cheapo Mora's thanks.

Is it stainless ,if so get a carbon steel one mine gets a quick once over and clean up and its back in the bag for next time, I cant for the life of me get an edge on stainless

I do have a carbon steel blade but the trade off there is looking after it and I found that a pain even if it was much easier to sharpen. I use the carbon steel blade for cleaning heads now and nothing else.

For 15 years+ I used a Schade Old Timer with a gut-hook tip and it is still in great condition and perfectly usable. I have no idea what quality of steel they are but it never let me down. Then a couple of years ago I was given a EKA swing blade and I have to say it has been my go to knife and I find it brilliant.

Robinson Hunters edge for me, but to be fair ,i did win it in a competition , very well made knife , and really the only knife i need, bit out of my price range if i ever lost it and had to replace it though,

After some advice on knives from some experienced stalkers, I bought a Mora, had an Opinel suggested and I have just bought an EKA swingblade. So far only used the Mora (stainless) in anger. It does the job, but I think I will get a carbon steel one as the stainless does not hold an edge for long. I'm looking forward to using the EKA, seems to be a sturdy knife.

I have a few, a folding EKA, a mora, and some old cheap stuff. The fact of the matter is you could do a gralloch with a Swiss Army knife, or any other sharp knife for that matter.... just buy one you like.

By far my favourite is this: Helle Harding 99 hunting knife
I have had mine 15 years, holds a good edge and it’s robust, and a full tang design. It has a nice handle which feels nice and secure even when bloody.
