Firearms ammunition of deceased relative

Hi all.

Unfortunately my father recently passed away and has left behind him a few shotguns and rifles. I’m a holder of both licenses but my variations on firearms are different to his apart from the .243.

I’m left with about 1000 .22lr rounds not knowing to do with them. Would a firearms dealer buy these back from me does anyone know?

Your local firearms dept will issue you with a section 7 permit to give you time to sort everything out properly.

22lr ammo is so cheap, 1000 rounds at maybe £2.50/100; probably easier just to give to the local rfd

Sorry to hear of your loss. now is not the time to think about getting rid or swapping over of rifles and shotguns etc. As VSS has said contact your local firearms dept. they should issue you a temporary permit to give you the time to sort it out without making the wrong decision. Certainly my local authority did when i lost my dad a few years back.

Have managed to get a temporary certificate issued from licensing dept today so will take time in sorting it all out.

If it is a temporary FAC, withpermissions for firearms and ammo, then all is fine.
If it is a letter of authority, check that it covers you for the ammunition. Often they don't.

Sorry for your loss.
It seems you have got sorted with a Section 7 permit so have time to sort out your fathers guns etc.
You said you have different calibre’s on your certificate, you could always apply for a variation if any of them have sentimental value.

I can only assume you haven’t bought 22lr for a long time. Or you’re putting that value on it as “secondhand”
Either that or we need to know your supplier.

Selling private you will never be offered retail prices, currently I pay £5/100 so £2.50/100 private isn’t far off what people would pay imho, max £3.5

I.e., £35??? What’s the point of bothering going to meet someone to sell it? Give it to an rfd and ask if they’ll give you £5 off something

Also, don’t forget the OP doesn’t have a 22lr authorisation, does he really want to be put down as having sold/transferred them?

He has a section seven I believe. Which is lawful authority (if it’s been issued correctly) to hold and dispose of said ammunition etc.
He would put the number of said permit along with his details in the box on the recipients FAC. No problem from a legal point of view.

Depending on brand and age of said ammunition 50% of its new price is not unreasonable. Possibly a bit more if it’s fairly new stuff.

Have found a home for rifles and ammo on a family friends permit and the .22 ammo has gone to a RFD.

Well done. At such a time of loss, administration of details such as this are just something else to deal with that you don't need. So, sorry to hear of your loss and pleased that at least this little part of the process has gone smoothly.
