Knife sharpening

Ok so this has probably been covered before on here but am interested in what others use to sharpen their knives.ive f%$#ed up many a good knife with those pocket sharpeners.
Although you can get them to a sharp edge I've found the diamond blades tend to take lumps out of the knife edge on close inspection.
However the ceramic ones seem more gentle and give an edge so you can at least finish off dressing the carcass.ive also tried a stone and stropping but that seems a bit tedious and long winded.yore thoughts please

Lansky is a tried and tested system, I've used the oilstones with them for years and never failed to get a good, durable edge. I recently used mine to rework the edge on a Helle knife that I bought second hand and never been too happy with the grind, particularly at the tip. Did a real good job to the extent that the guy running the stalking syndicate that I'm on remarked on the sharpness of it when he borrowed it to gralloch a red knobber. They come up for sale on here and other like minded forums fairly regularly, in fact I bought a set recently for my daughter to give to her hubby for their second wedding anniversary.

Cheers,

Mick

I've been using a DMT diamond thing, and without great success I might add. I was brought up using a simple oilstone, sharpening my Lowen Messer fishing knife to shaving sharpness with ease. Think I might go back to that...

I suggest sharpening them at home either with a gadget like mchughcb suggests or plain sharpening stones.
but instead of just one knife having two, mabe three on hand for when one goes dull... that way you dont fk them up with pocket sharpeners...

Two knives on my belt and probably another two or three Mora's in the roe sack or vehicle in case of emergency.

Anything used gets a proper going over with a Lansky diamond system and / or leather paddle strop later.

I use the worksharp guided one, I find it pretty good, I wish it was slightly bigger / longer for doing large kitchen knives but its perfect for stalking knives. Overall I'm very happy with it. I can get my knives sharp enough to shave an arm which is as good as I need.

Start with 600 grit wet and dry stuck to a 6"x6" board soak it go with the angle of the blade for 2 mins max either side then go to 1,000 W & D then 1,800 W & D , repeat and a good leather soap strop, costs in total £0.60p that's only 20p a sheet, ends up its a razor IF YOU take your time and get the angle right
