Remington 700 Aftermarket Trigger Advice

I have a Remington 700 SA in 223, which I love to shoot. Heavy SPS tactical 16.5” barrel in a Magpul hunter stock isn’t everyone cup of tea but I like it and for reasons I can’t explain I shoot better with this rifle than all the others.

Apart from the standard factory trigger that is, which compared with other rifles I have owned is very “mechanical”.

I know because it’s a Remington there is about a million aftermarket bits you can buy, so I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on a fairly cheap but decent aftermarket trigger mech? All my rifles are hunting rifles first and only used on a range for practice occasionally.

I have just had a variation for and increase from 243 to 308 signed off so I will potentially be looking at a matching Remington 700 SPS tactical in 308’as well. Probably will go for a 20” barrel though this time.

Timney 510. I like the broad and striated shoe. I now have a Remington 700 that came with a 40X trigger which is superb, so sold the 510 a while ago. Would definitely buy again though.

I’ve put timney 2 stage triggers in both my Remington 700 rifles and would never go back.
Livens are selling them around the £215 mark which is the cheapest I’ve ever seen them.
It transformed the rifles compared to a standard trigger

Timney. Unless you are into competitions or really can tell the difference in quality of pull between a simple Timney for about £130 and something costing over a hundred quid more, there's little point spending more.

I had two Timney triggers in Rem 700 so far, might have been an ordinary type as I thought not even close to a standard Tikka trigger. Better than original Remmy but not much. The best trigger I had so far in a Rem type action is the DCR trigger. Now I have a Triggertech but that rifle is just being put together. Spuhr also supplies Triggertech.

I replaced my Timney 510’s with Triggertechs and I would say the Triggertechs have the edge. You can also adjust the pull weight with the trigger in situ by way of an Allen screw.

I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint also in 223. You can adjust the XMark Pro Trigger - I have adjusted mine and got a nice crisp and light trigger pull that's on a par with the Timney that's on one of my other rifles. Before spending money have a look at:

Interesting I might have a play later before going mad.

I’ve recently in past two months purchased two Timeny “Calvin” triggers adjustable from 8 ounces to 2 1/2 pounds . The one in my heavy barrel 260 was at 12 ounces unadjusted when installed . The other is going in my just finished 6mm-06 and will also be set at 10-12 ounces . Below is a group shot with the 260 at 100 using the Timeny trigger .B427D42D-5059-4DA1-A1D7-BED9D4BC05E3.webp

FWIW I also recently had a pair of RifleBasix triggers installed in a pair of HB CZ527’s . And while not a 700 the two triggers were easy to setup and both are breaking right now at about 6-8 ounces . I’ve also had very good luck with Shilen triggers in 700’s but don’t own any at the moment .

Something that’s not been mentioned is relativity ! What you might consider good I might not or vice versa . Generally my preference is for a single stage with NO creep that can be adjusted between 8 ounces and two or three pounds . Other folks may be able to live with creep and the break point is usually better heavier for the vast majority . I like triggers in mere ounces when I’m
Working up loads or just punching paper , when I hunt and it’s going to be cold I want 2 to 2 1/2 pounds . I have a pair of Geiselle two stage triggers in my AR-15 and AR-10 while I don’t like two stage and these two break at around 2 1/2 pounds I’ve still been able to shoot some very good groups down to about 1/4 MOA . Anyway remember recommendations while good to hear may not in reality be what you want once you try them .

I have Rifle Basix, Timney and Jewel. My experience is that Jewel is the nicest to use but not far in front of the Timney which is a close second. Rifle Basix is behind both of them but still much better than the std trigger.

I finally put my 6.5CM together today and tried the Triggertech trigger. It is really good, if one can't shoot with that I'd say go back to playing playstation.

I have a Timney in one of my remmys the other has a GC 2 match trigger in it. My .204 has a rifle Basix.

The two are single stage and excellent. The GC 2 is fabulous sadly now unavailable.
