TO ALL DOG OWNERS THAT VACCINATE THEIR DOGS - PLEASE READ

I am sorry for your loss.
A word of warning from my own experience.
A vet won’t build a case against another vet. We had it with my spaniel. The vets made a complete cock up and he ended up in the animal hospital. Reading the paperwork for the drugs he was on. It was apparent he shouldn’t have been given them. It gave the side effects he went to hospital for. I then asked the hospital the question directly and asked for them to put it on his notes.
He said I can’t do that.
So to my mind „boys code. Let’s stick together“.
It’s frustrating for you what’s happened. I was angry at my vets for years! Everyone was so dismissive. But the fact is we won’t beat them. The medical company will never be beaten.
I really feel sorry for your loss. I hope you can get closure.

From the pups first jab it depends on what the dog has been exposed to .Ive owned terriers for 35 years and killed literally tens of thousands of rats with never a follow up jab and only one instance of lepto in an elderly bitch .
My sister had a jack russel that never saw anything ,was jabbed annually and has recently died with the jaundice that accompanies Lepto at only 6 years old .
There’s a huge mark up on drugs in the UK so why wouldn’t a vet want to jab your dog yearly with something that appears innocuous .
There is no human form of the vaccine .

I respect the work vets do but feel that perhaps they, as an entity, would garner more trust if they either a) didn’t mark up the drugs so extensively or b) at least were more transparent about it. I appreciate it costs money to run a practice, pay staff, keep the lights on etc. But, from my experience with vets, they’d get a lot more kudos from being up front and explaining: “I know this is expensive but this is why” and letting customers form their opinions with the facts. Otherwise people may believe that some practices are taking advantage of some owners.

I changed vets a couple of years ago because the original used to offer price matching on flea/worming treatments - after a while they began charging for the relevant prescriptions and then starting ramping up the prescription costs £7.... £10..... £12.... £15.... when I asked when the increases might stop and how this is justified when the vets consultation fees hadn’t increased, they were incredibly rude - which to be honest was the catalyst for my changing - and couldn’t offer an answer. I’d rather they said “it’s really competitive, we can keep some costs down by adding mark ups to drugs - which is common practice - but it is a tricky issue” and if they continued to offer price matching for some drugs like flea/wormers, then maybe the mark up on vaccinations etc. would be easy to swallow

I gave mine there first injections here at the house and then none of them have ever had another, no boosters or anything. Thats all my dogs in the last 30 yrs. Not one single booster and not one single requirement for it either.

Gents, very belated thank you for all of your posts and sympathies. We've been away for a few days and TBH trying not to think about it as it is still very upsetting.

Yes of course it is possible there was an underlying issue, she was 12yrs old. But we both just have a hunch that something wasn't right and I have worked in Industry long enough to know that coincidences aren't that common - if a greaser fails to keep the oil in a gearbox topped up it isn't a coincidence when the gearbox blows up.

Still not sure what to do, when we get our 'normal' vets bill which is anticipated any day now (reckon it will also be around £1k) we will be asking for all of the results of the tests they did - a friends son is doing vet-med at Uni so will be asking for his opinion. We will then probably be writing a difficult letter to our vet but I doubt it will do any good. We will also be writing to the BVA to report the incident as apparently they have a form for just such circumstances.

It is interesting however that some of you also seem to know other that have experienced similar things - there is apparently a Facebook page devoted to this that has something like a hundred thousand followers - I need to check that out but it does really suggest there is something in this. I just wish now I had questioned our vet as to why he wanted to change the vaccine and if he had mentioned a greater risk (which he didn't), then I might have just insisted on sticking with the Canigen L2 - I remain convinced it was the second booster dose of the Nobivac L4 that killed her.
