Hmmmmm! Dodgy skyline shot!!

I only saw the scope covers comming off. So, don't know when he actually chambered the round and I don't know what cartridge/bullet combo was being used either, but... If it was one of my rifles...I'd say there was plenty-o-backstop. Might have liked to see the shot hit a few inches lower though. Mr. Moose didn't exactly seem overwhelmed by it either, though doubtless it had the full effect ... once he'd had a short period in which to consider his situation. They are big, aren't they?

From the point of view of the camera, the shot for me would have to have been passed up, the guide fella must have been pretty confident in the condition of the clients rifle though!

Sky liners are a no no even with such a size of an animal even with your rifle Tamus.:shock:

:D Thought that might get you going.

What do you reckon it would take to get a thru and thru on a big ole bull moose then?

ps. I'll bet you folding money Gitano would tell us we're being a bit............ over cautious here.... too. :stir:

Overcautious is cheap on the mind,......... even knowing the ground just over the hill could have a very nasty result, once it's on the way down the barrel thats the end of it!

Even an animal like that can be missed i tooh a chap out a couple of years ago and when he was going to take his shot he couldnt get comfortable so i moved the rifle farward when i did it was discoverd the scope was loose on the front mount so end of stalk not end of life  With regards what would go through that animal some thing big strong solid and fast

My problem with this sort of thread, if you'll allow me to have such a problem, is; we are criticising fellow sportsmen who clearly didn't feel the shot was wrong (for whatever reason) and we're doing it on the strength of a video which was not taken through the scope of the shooter and which doesn't neccessarily represent a fair picture of what actually occurred. I'm guessing they thought there was plenty backstop, but maybe you should ask them.

You would need to have been in a 30 foot high seat to have got a back stop but you are right Tamus each to there own just make sure you dont walk out with me and take a shot like that you right ear would have been ringing for a week.
I like to know were my bullet is heading

Try hunting in Africa. No-one cares about backstops. No problem shooting trespassers.....

If you are shooting in Bushveld and no where near the property boundary then you will be lucky to have 100M of visibility so OK to shoot. If you MUST have a backstop then you won't do much shooting, same for skyliners.

Different places, different practices.

Well stan thats ok if your in Africa were the people are disposable but were i am from there are no sky line shots taken and remeber there are young new starts on here who might think its ok to take such shots after your self and Tamus have suggest that in some way it was safe and ok to do it.

6pointer,

The video in question isn't shot in the UK. Our "rules" don't apply, local ones do. If that was a safe shot there then so be it.

You "choose" to export your views to other nations.

Now steady 6p. I suggested that we don't know it wasn't safe. BTW Moose are famous bullet traps and even allowing for a shoot through I can find no evidence online of anyone ever being the victim of such a bullet. That's not to say that the shot would be one I'd take here, on our soft wee deer.

But... If you take me out Moose shooting (aye, for one that's too big for a cat) I'll let you call the shots, Deal?

I dont export anything in my opinion it was an unsafe shot and i certainly would not recomend any one take a shot like that. But smullery if you want to and suggest its ok thats your opinion you know the old saying opinons are like arseholes and all that jaz

smullery thats a very personal reply so i will finnish the sentence if you didnt know how it finnishes. (opinions are like arseholes every one has one )

How many shots do yu take where the backstop is 100% guarenteed. Hill stalking?? You shoot your deer. Another stands up that you did not see. In these days of high access and everyone in their comando camo anyone could be lying out on that hillside. All we can do is make sure the shot is as safe as possible. That means taking all reasonable precautions. On the shot the stalkers moved in from the side as they tracked the beast, Maybe they dropped in elevation. having seen behind the beast for a few miles. Could even been working with a spotter. This is fast becoming the PC brigades sounding board,

Hey jimbo here is one for you and the smullery chap just down size the round you use (Fill your boots as they say)

Anyone who takes a shot and does not know what is behind the target is not fit to hold a FAC and should have it, and there rifles taken from them sooner Rather than later.
And that goes for any country.

Anyone who condones it well hold your head in shame, and get some training before you injure someone or worse
