Plant based diet will save the planet

Latest guff from the British Broadcorping Castration . Typically with no proper science or balance. (I cannot bring myself to post a link to the bar-steward's news feed)

Last time I checked, crops need NPK (Nitrogen Phosphorous and Potassium) Three key elements. A majority of this will come from good old FYM (Farmyard Manure)

So let's suppose we get rid of all the cattle, sheep, pigs etc, where will this come from?

By mining.

Here is the lack of balance. ..

If the world's population went on to a 100% plant based diet there is only (at present) enough recoverable NPK to provide for the next 20 years of crop production.

And that takes no account of the carbon emissions generated in the mining, processing and distribution.

In so far as methane production is concerned, (by cattle particularly) here again is another lot of bad science/scare-mongering (aka bollx). One only needs to understand the carbon cycle and one can see that when done correctly cattle are pretty much carbon neutral.

See below a response to this question that I asked the farmer who runs the land surrounding my place in the UK I.. (and have permission to shoot over..)

"Essentially all the methane emitted by the methanogenic bacteria in the Rumen of my cows comes from carbon fixed out of the atmosphere via photosynthesis into grass and forage. So all the carbon being emitted into the atmosphere has come out of the atmosphere. The vegans ignore this fact about organic production and only count the emissions not the whole system or carbon cycle.

But it's actually better than that. Methanotrophic bacteria in the soil live off the methane emitted from herbivores (it is obviously emitted near the ground). As they respirate, reproduce and die they turn methane in the atmosphere into organic carbon stored in the soil. In addition my grazing system uses rest periods to maximise production without chemical fertilisers. This allows the plants to maximise plant exudates to feed the symbiotic relationships the plants have with the soil biology that feeds the plants in the absence of applied feed. These plant exudates feed soil bacteria, soil fungi and microscopic and larger inverts etc. As this soil food web becomes more active it builds soil organic carbon (natural fertility) which helps me but also stores atmospheric carbon in the soil. Meaning that the grazing system is actually carbon negative. But again the vegans refuse to count the whole system cycle and sequestration. They only look at emissions in isolation.

In addition growing vegetables and grain requires annual or twice annual cultivation which allows the organic carbon in the soil to be oxidized into the atmosphere increasing atmospheric carbon. Then add in the fuel and fertiliser that both contribute to carbon emissions and it shows they are in a glass house throwing stones.

I was on an organic veg farm the other day. You should have seen the amount of mouse and rabbit traps. What do you think happens to squirrels on a nut farm? Thousands and thousands of sentient animals being killed deliberately to feed vegans. We've planted all our arable fields at xxxx to wildflower meadows that will be great for wildlife but also for producing quality organic beef. If this was in veg production all the animals that rely on the grasslands (barn owls, kestrel, small mammals and endless inverts and pollinators) all get sprayed out or ploughed out and would be killed or starve. In 20 years we will run out of mineral phosphates so we will need animal manure to grow veg anyway.

The lie is that it is a choice between an environmental vegan system and a destructive animal agriculture system.

In my opinion farming works best when we mimic and work in balance with nature. I am a professional ecologist so I am biased but I love having a productive system that also builds an abundance of wildlife diversity."

Sadly the BBC wouldn't bother with talking to someone like him, because he makes sense, it has no shock value and is good science

(I would add that since he took over 4 years ago the number of Roe has increased nicely but not to a point "yet" where they have caused a problem . Haha)

I eat a lot plant based meals ? I must do as its all killed /boxed or wrapped at a food plant o_O :coat: !

Whats he on about?

And changing the way we farm could improve things for ourselves, as well as for the planet: "Balanced diets featuring plant-based foods such as those based on coarse grains, legumes, fruits and vegetable, nuts and seeds and animal-sourced food produced in resilient, sustainable and low-greenhouse-gas-emission systems present major opportunities for adaptation and mitigation while generating significant co-benefits in terms of human health."

Isn't the bold akin to intensive farming like piggeries/fowl sheds etc?

What a total load of **** . Am I dreaming or do we all live on planet earth? if Im not dreaming then why wasn't the planet destroyed when there were far more herbivores producing methane etc
or when the seas rose and millions of acres of herbage got flooded, in turn producing billions of tonnes of methane? I sorry but none of their maths adds up.

And the bollx keeps coming from the bbc

stop ageing has been actresses from flying round the sodding planet in dirty great jets to stand next to a pink boat in the middle of london causing traffic snarl ups and even more pollution than they were originally ranting on about. to regain the bathing in adulation they crave. dozy talent-less hypocritical luvvie bitch,,,,
might do a lot more good.

All the beasts and fowls I eat were herbivores in life. So not only am I eating an essentially vegetarian based diet, it's recycled vegetarianism. You can't get much more sustainable than that.

Reducing the so called pollution caused by intensive farming is easy, remove the need for intensive farming, reduce the worlds population.

Neil.
It's funny that in all this bollocks, there is never a straight forward comment about reducing the world's population, after all, the ever increasing population will be the thing that causes wars/pestilence/drought/extinction of the human race.... but of course all the apologists won't say anything like that because it might be seen to be offensive.

The idiots that promote the entire world going to a plant based diet forget several key points.

First - nearly all the major plants that we omnivores consume come from extensive row crop monoculture.
Second - ruminants are the most efficient way to gather/harvest carbon from lands that should not be in monoculture. We cant eat grass (well, we can but we cant digest it) and the hillsides that grow grass well are often prone to erosion. Converting these hillsides to row crops will degrade that soil more rapidly than almost any other manner (except maybe dumping toxic waste on them).
Third - when looking at transportation costs, meat is a very efficient way to transport dense calories from areas of production to areas of use. Many plant based foods are not nearly as dense (some like fruits and vegetables are primarily water).
Lastly - while pulses/grains/etc.. can be easily stored, fruits and vegetables cannot. They have very distinct windows of harvest, use, and shelf life. Meat can be kept alive, grazing along happily, until needed - even through winter, allowing a large expansion of the harvest and use window.

Actually, I'm going to go against the flow here. It's pretty incontrovertible that eating a plant-based diet is a very good way to reduce emissions and save the world. Personally, I don't fancy a miserable life eating soya (whatever the ***k that tastes like), recycling my own **** and reading the Guardian. Even better than eating a plant-based diet is to encourage all these weak-minded urban morons to go the extra step, reduce the food miles in their diet, and f**k off up a mountainside and graze it directly.
Since there'd be no livestock, someone's going to have to graze the upland SSSI's and National Parks. Don't suppose they'd last more than a week or two, and then ALL of their carbon emissions would be eliminated. The rest of us could carry on eating and doing what we like in peace and quiet.

Is it just in the UK ?? or do other countries around the world get fed this half baked s**t ?.

Actually , this story aired last night on the CBC in Canada as well . More , not so subtle , social engineering . No one wants to confront the Gorilla in the room , over population , so they come up with this ............... I wonder what the methane emissions would be if all of humanity went vegan ?
Most of my meat is wild game of one form or another , but my situation isn't the norm world wide , so the above story doesn't really apply to me .

The report was co sponsored by EAT. An organisation set up by Gunhild Stordalen. She is married to a billionaire and flies around the world in a £25 million private jet telling us we must eat less meat to reduce our carbon footprint. The BBC of course spread the propaganda. You used to see sh*t spreaders behind tractors. Now see them on the BBC news every night. As for Gunhild she can go f*** herself. I'm off to bed. Need to be up early in the morning to go and get some red meat.
