Latest guff from the British Broadcorping Castration . Typically with no proper science or balance. (I cannot bring myself to post a link to the bar-steward's news feed)
Last time I checked, crops need NPK (Nitrogen Phosphorous and Potassium) Three key elements. A majority of this will come from good old FYM (Farmyard Manure)
So let's suppose we get rid of all the cattle, sheep, pigs etc, where will this come from?
By mining.
Here is the lack of balance. ..
If the world's population went on to a 100% plant based diet there is only (at present) enough recoverable NPK to provide for the next 20 years of crop production.
And that takes no account of the carbon emissions generated in the mining, processing and distribution.
In so far as methane production is concerned, (by cattle particularly) here again is another lot of bad science/scare-mongering (aka bollx). One only needs to understand the carbon cycle and one can see that when done correctly cattle are pretty much carbon neutral.
See below a response to this question that I asked the farmer who runs the land surrounding my place in the UK I.. (and have permission to shoot over..)
"Essentially all the methane emitted by the methanogenic bacteria in the Rumen of my cows comes from carbon fixed out of the atmosphere via photosynthesis into grass and forage. So all the carbon being emitted into the atmosphere has come out of the atmosphere. The vegans ignore this fact about organic production and only count the emissions not the whole system or carbon cycle.
But it's actually better than that. Methanotrophic bacteria in the soil live off the methane emitted from herbivores (it is obviously emitted near the ground). As they respirate, reproduce and die they turn methane in the atmosphere into organic carbon stored in the soil. In addition my grazing system uses rest periods to maximise production without chemical fertilisers. This allows the plants to maximise plant exudates to feed the symbiotic relationships the plants have with the soil biology that feeds the plants in the absence of applied feed. These plant exudates feed soil bacteria, soil fungi and microscopic and larger inverts etc. As this soil food web becomes more active it builds soil organic carbon (natural fertility) which helps me but also stores atmospheric carbon in the soil. Meaning that the grazing system is actually carbon negative. But again the vegans refuse to count the whole system cycle and sequestration. They only look at emissions in isolation.
In addition growing vegetables and grain requires annual or twice annual cultivation which allows the organic carbon in the soil to be oxidized into the atmosphere increasing atmospheric carbon. Then add in the fuel and fertiliser that both contribute to carbon emissions and it shows they are in a glass house throwing stones.
I was on an organic veg farm the other day. You should have seen the amount of mouse and rabbit traps. What do you think happens to squirrels on a nut farm? Thousands and thousands of sentient animals being killed deliberately to feed vegans. We've planted all our arable fields at xxxx to wildflower meadows that will be great for wildlife but also for producing quality organic beef. If this was in veg production all the animals that rely on the grasslands (barn owls, kestrel, small mammals and endless inverts and pollinators) all get sprayed out or ploughed out and would be killed or starve. In 20 years we will run out of mineral phosphates so we will need animal manure to grow veg anyway.
The lie is that it is a choice between an environmental vegan system and a destructive animal agriculture system.
In my opinion farming works best when we mimic and work in balance with nature. I am a professional ecologist so I am biased but I love having a productive system that also builds an abundance of wildlife diversity."
Sadly the BBC wouldn't bother with talking to someone like him, because he makes sense, it has no shock value and is good science
(I would add that since he took over 4 years ago the number of Roe has increased nicely but not to a point "yet" where they have caused a problem . Haha)
