Sporting Rifle Shoot – Sunday 8th September 2019

I'm afraid that you are mistaken there Mark or you have confused the H4H with another event such as range days run by BASC at the BSRC. At the H4H there was no need for the safe shooter certificate (SSC) as all shooters were closely monitored/supervised. We have never had the authority to issue such certificates as we aren't an affiliated club merely guests of the BSRC (British Sporting Rifle Club) who very generously hosted the H4H shoot.

I would also like to add to what Oracle has already said regarding those certificates issued by BASC. It's my understanding that certificates issued by BASC are limited to ranges up to 200yards/metres. So if you have a SSC issued by BASC and attempt to book a lane at Bisley through BASC you should not be able to book ranges longer than 200 yards/metres.

Incidentally my SSC ran out in December and I recently enquired about joining the NRA as an individual member so that I could shoot at the Phoenix meeting and possibly this shoot on the 8th of September. I though that it would be a simple matter to extend it but the NRA wanted me to take two re-assessments for which they would only charge me a further £50 on top of my annual membership fee. I declined their very kind offer and decided not to take up membership of the NRA. In light of recent events between the BSRC and the NRA I am very glad now that I did.

No I am not mistaken. I did my SSC on the first H4H event 2017 I think. I did it and got a renewal by doing the minimum attendance of once a year but as I missed last year I was hoping they'd do a SSC again but they did not.

Sorry Mark but you are definitely mistaken there mate. We have never had the ability to carry out safe shooter assessments, perhaps you are thinking about one of the BASC shooting days held at the British Sporting Rifle Club? In fact the more I think about it the more I am convinced that you probably did your SSC assessment with BASC on one of their days or perhaps you might have done it with the BDS as they too have hired the BSRC ranges on occasions I believe.

Incidentally the first H4H shoot was held at Monmouth in August 2010 as were the next three H4H shoots, the shoot then moved to the BSRC in 2014. To be honest I couldn't remember the dates and had to look it up.

Sorry but you are mistaken. have you done one at a Basc day maybe.? We haven't issued SSC cards at the H4h shoots.

A fair and sensible question as I don’t believe the BSRC range will be open on the Sunday according the calendar as the Ashes Match is on the Saturday. Best double check via rangehire@bsrc.co.uk though.

I case anyone else is interested, the BSRC range will be closed for maintainance. Blast. I still plan to be there though. I'll just have to find some other time to come along.

Would like to attend but not a good day - have to coach my son's rugby team during the morning and my daughter birthday party in the afternoon. Hope to make the LR events later in the month.

A club range near Oldham is running this course of fire in the afternoon of Sunday 8th Sept. The scores (with the shooters' consent, and if they're shot with the right kind of rifle) will be submitted to the BSRC.

There might be some places available for (FAC-holding) visitors - so if you're within striking-distance and you fancy a go, please drop me a PM.
A quick bump for my post above. If you fancy having a go, and near Oldham is nearer for you than Bisley, please drop me a PM.

Best get use to its closure!

No change in NRA discourse then? I mean, why would there be... It's really quite difficult to find time to develop a load or check a zero. Now if it also becomes hard to find a place to do it, it's all just going to end up impossible.

A number of people have asked why this shoot hasn't been declared a BSRC "Guest Day", thus circumnavigating the requirement for non BSRC member production of NRA Shooter Competency Certificates. Here is my understanding:

1. First question is whether BSRC would sanction use of one of their 12 Guest Days per year allowance.
2. If they did then they are required to notify Surrey Police and ensure the names of all attending are provided in advance.
3. On the day, every shooter, regardless of whether they are BSRC or NRA members or not, has to fill out and sign a Section 21 Declaration.
4. This is an awful lot of administration for what might be limited benefit. It might also put regular attendees who are BSRC members off coming for easons such as a;- not wanting to have to mess about doing S21 declarations and b;- wanting to shoot competitively rather than stand around waiting for ‘guests’ to be supervised one-to-one.

While the above may appear a little negative, should a BSRC member wish to formally request such a 'modified' Chamois Shoot and is happy to organise it as a stand-alone dedicated Guest Day, then please do put such a proposal to our Executive Committee for their consideration.

Whatever the outcome it is clearly too late in the day to do it this year.

One big problem, which I don't understand at all and have never had an answer to, is the shooter must have an individual membership of the BASC. Why, lots of people have membership as part of a group, wildfowling, game shoot etc? I have checked with BASC and there is no difference in the cover. So can we have a valid reason please?

David.

Is there an acronym mix up here? BSRC, not BASC?

1st question ( guest day) if you don't ask you will not know.
2nd question (Bsrc members and S 21) I'm sure that's not the case.
But as you say it's too late now ! and after the lease saga next year it may all be irrelevant.

I do know the difference, but when I asked about valid insurance I was informed it had to be individual membership!

David.
Because as a BASC full individual member you are automatically a member of BASC Rifle Club, which has HO approval. Therefore if you have a personal FAC and have undertaken the SSC assessment through BASC it may be possible for you to shoot as a full member of BASC rifle club as an invited guest of another HO approved club, in this case BSRC. There are other levels of BASC membership such as Syndicate or Wildfowling Club membership that do not meet the requirement for "full and individual membership" and therefore do not fall within the HO criteria for approved Rifle Clubs.

In respect of running this event as a "Guest Day", K is quite correct. Most clubs, BSRC included, limit the availability of their guest days as there are never enough.
The event itself is unlikely to fill the requirement of a Guest Day, whereby, amongst other criteria, the majority of those invited to Guest Days are expected to be none FAC holders. A "guest" could then shoot where they had been invited by a full member of that club who is personally known to them, or alternatively all those invited "guests" were members of a bona fide, recognised organisation. This last point would be at the whim of Surrey Police to decide whether the SD was in fact such a"recognised" organisation or not.

I finally sat down last night to do some reloading for the first time since last year's Chamois Shoot. 48 rounds of 7mm-08 ready to go! Why 48? Because it seems that last year I prepared 48 cases and no time to do any more... That leaves me with 3cm of N140 left in the bottom of the tub and 9 Sierra FMJs in the box. I think I need to restock.

The point though is that I'm ready for Sunday!

A polite reminder of the rules for each comp for those none BSRC members attending and don't forget to bring your SCC and plenty of cash!

The Chamois
5 shots prone using a small rucksack. No bipods/sticks.
5 shots sitting using a single stick. (As per last year double sticks may be used but only if firmly closed and one leg is slightly extended.

The Fox
5 shots sitting using double sticks in 90 seconds.
5 shots standing using double sticks in 90 seconds.

Additional notes for The Fox:
a. If you cannot get 4 rounds in the mag and one up the spout I will happily hold your 5th round and pass it to you when required.
b. If you encounter a loading problem I will stop the clock. I don't want anyone going home thinking they've been unlucky or unfairly treated.

Lastly and probably most importantly, do NOT close the bolt until told to. This will only be when the the rifle is in the shoulder and very clearly pointing at the backstop and not blue sky.

K

...and a final repeat of the invitation to take part in the Northern parallel event, near Oldham, on Sunday afternoon.
If you're an FAC-holder and fancy a go, please drop me a PM for further details.
:)

Perfect day for it :thumb:

Gutted that I can’t make it this time, but great that more of these events are at weekends and not weekdays like most of the longer range events.
