Avoiding Confrontations

This morning I was retrieving some of my trail cams from a new piece of ground when I was confronted by a neighbouring landowner fortunately outside of the boundary but on the highway to be specific.

Most of us that have a few senior years under our belts and have been shooting for sometime can generally anticipate what members of the public are going to be like within the first few sentences, this was no exception!

Obviously I did not reveal too much information because as we know, what we do can be perceived to be quite emotive to some folks, however she worked it out in no time was going to call all and sundry to get me stopped Inc RSPCA!

Just wondering if any other fellow stalkers have had a similar encounter and how that went for them? in my case we agreed to disagree and I retreated deciding that was the best course of action as she was beginning to get quite animated.

By the way if the fellow stalker who was driving the dustcart, which stopped to talk to me whilst this was kicking off, is on this forum could you p.m. me?

As always, people are totally entitled to their view. But, as we are seeing with every day society, especially in politics these days many people think theirs is the right way and they don't tolerate any differences. the main reason society today is in decline.

If you put your trail cams out again, consider their safety!

Ha! I can remember back to a time when i would have been roughly 13... I was in a long walked up line on an end of season shoot, say 5th in line from the end. We were proceeding across a huge field with a road across the middle. Said road being un-fenced. Anyway, as i approached the road, a little old lady pulled up in her car and wound the window down. I proceeded to unload the shotgun as you would and bend down to engage with the old woman. Well, be-jesus did she let go on me. Calling me all the 'mu**ering bas****s' in the world and how she has pheasants as pets in her house. I was so aghast i was almost knocked out of my cotton socks! Needless to say one of the older gentlemen who was more accustomed to her told her where to go. There are maniacs everywhere!

No problem, be polite and walk away , saying " that's your opinion as I have mine, do what you have to do" " have a pleasant day goodbye"( they will be so shocked that you didn't engage, coz that's what they want , they will just do one red in the face)

Don't engage , your doing nowt wrong ( I know it's horrible being ignorant ) but the fewer polite words spoken to the idiots the better

Toodle pip( whilst whistling a merry tune lol )

Not worth the sweat off your ballcocks worrying bout it mate, let them worry bout it

and try to place a well hidden one recording any unwanted interference on another less hidden example. it really helps when reporting trespass and criminal damage to the local police.

Perhaps it's a hangover from my childhood spent in the occasional company of men who loved their long dogs and wouldn't know how to spell "permission" that to this day, and after 30 years of shooting without break over one piece of land, I still adopt the manner of a poacher if I see somone whilst out and even if they frankly have no right to be there. And before anyone tells me how misguided I am, may I ask that they please note but two words in this post:

"Thirty (30) Years".

No need to enter into a discussion, just say good morning and walk away

I remember in my teens ferreting with a friend. We were quite a distance from the footpath. A guided walk was straying off the path looking at the limestone paving (rock formations).
Well some of them made their way across and asked what we were doing. The next thing we’re getting a tirade of abuse from a woman and her husband. One line was why didn’t they take us to the butcher there’d be more meat on us. The husband then tried to assault me. What he hadn’t bargained on was my mate with the spade telling him in no uncertain terms to back off.
The landowner has serious words with the walk guides. The gist being keep your clients in check or go elsewhere. I believe that the police had a word too. Unfortunately nowadays it’s more likely we would be the ones getting leaned on by the law.

As pathetic and childish as it seems, protect yourself by getting your phone out and filming the situation, discreetly if possible. I completely ignore them if I can tell they are just looking for an argument and remove myself from the situation. Sad that's the way things are going, but the main thing is to look after your own interests as these type of people will do and say anything after the fact to get you into bother.

From my days out hunting ,the filming bit is what inflames a situation on both sides .
Like you say discretion is the word .
We shouldn’t have to justify what we do ,that’s us take it or leave it .
Walking away is the hardest thing many of us will ever do but definitely the best course of action .

I had a recent interaction with a neighbouring resident who was challenging my legality of what I was doing....I've only been shooting in the land for 30+ years! I had my phone on voice recorder and tucked in my upper jacket pocket, nice and discreet and recorded the entire thing. Once I said I can give you an ICAD number to phone the plod he seemed to calm down a bit and we both joined forces in cursing the concrete jungle that's spreading into the green countryside :)

Excuse my ignorance but what is an ICAD number?

Intergraph Computer Assisted Dispatch

Basically its jargon for an incident number so it can be referred to and information accessed quickly. At the risk of opening that worm can I notify the police on occasions of my conducting pest control to avoid ARV visits etc which in this circumstance worked a treat ;)
