Travelling With Firearms

I'm planning a wild boar hunt in Hungary this December and would like to take my own rifle as I struggled with the estate rifles last year.

Anyone here have any experience of what the process is to travel with your rifle abroad, or have you done it?

Just looking for some pointers so I don't fall into any obvious traps.

Cheers,

Chris
Easy Jet to Budapest is Easy and about £70 for the Rifle and ammo Return

Luthansa and swiss airlines have a ban on any firearms out of Heathrow ok with Birm and Man for Luthansa and City for Swiss .EASY JET is easy Gatwick to Budapest.
That is an airline decision based on them changing their dangerous goods handler, not a ban by the airport authority on all carriage of firearms as the OP suggested.

Given that its likely that we will be leaving the EU on 31st October and the European Firearms Permit will no longer be valid for UK Citizens, I would check what sort of import / export permits you will need to take your firearms into Hungary, on the basis that you will be travelling from outside the EU. Ditto for any trophies

Yes, but would you be comfortable booking a trip on the 1st of November, if you knew we were leaving the EU on the Oct' 31st ?
I'm coming back from a week shooting in switzerland on the 28th Oct, I have decided the timing is probably just right for a balls up, so am leaving my rifle at home, besides a lot of the shooting is handguns so I'll get by

Interesting thread. In July I took my rifle to Norway where, although no longer in the EU, They use the EU pass as your temporary licence.
Everyone i enquired with believed the EU pass will be grandfathered in post brexit. The EU may continue to issue EU pass system to non EU residents, like a shengen for your rifle.
We weren't able to pay the sporting goods supplement with the website the tickets were bought from.
Norwegen weren't able to take payment as we hadn't bought our tickets direct from them.
At Gatwick it seemed to take Norwegen's staff by surprise on the way out - used all of our extra check in time
The Met were super efficient - one email and papers back to me within a week.
Hampshire confused 'issue' with 'grant' and the NRA had to intervene.
Norwegen allow a weight of ammunition, rather than a count, and wanted the rounds in the rifle case

Is Switzerland treated as EU, with regard to the EFP ? I thought it was outside ?
nope they still use the EFP,in fact a friend of mine there has just had one issued for a trip here from his local Canton Police. to be honest I don't expect any problems there, it would be on the return leg through the tunnel, just in case things suddenly get confused :p

With us it was the other way around, just showed FAC to the Border Farce lady, confirmed serial numbers and we were off. She said it was an every day thing.

Last few times going on the chunnel I have never had the gun checked in or out and 3 times not even asked for a FAC.

Its all very well hoping that things like the EFP will be grandfathered across, but as 7th October 2019 nothing has been agreed. Norway recognises the EFP and Norwegian hunters can use EFP eleswhere in Europe. Thats because there is agreement between Norway and The EU.

If you want certainty, you have to work on the basis of no agreement with EU and that a British issued EFP is no longer valid.

if we leave on 31st with No Deal we will be treated just like anybody coming from a non EU country that has no preferential arrangements with the EU.

Took my rifle, had a fixed blade knife about 7inches long and a small pen knife. The chap x raying, they x ray twice, asked me if the blade was a lock blade... I said there is sheath knife there I don't think it really matters...was was a bit flippant but it was early morning...
