Home insurance for firearms

Just had our renewal and there's a 25% increase in the premium, nothing has changed from last year so no idea why it's been increased.
We're with Privilege as they cover single items up to £4000, without declaring the item.
Are there any other companies that people are using for home and firearm insurance? This is not insurance for sporting or pest control purposes.

I’d avoid Nfu like the plague told me I had too many firearms to Insure ( 8 ) and that they’d never insured anyone in my area ... a barefaced lie as the head keeper on the estate was formerly insured by them . I went with Aviva

I'm with privilege and the renewal had increased.
We questioned why it had gone up and got offered a loyalty discount

NFU, unlike jimbo I've had nothing but great service from my local branch, I even got mine covered for accidental damage while in use (some will only provide cover while in the home)

NFU Mutual, like all companies of any sort you will get an odd person with a gripe (not a dig at you Jimbo) but they are one of the top rated insurers, deal with households with firearms on a daily basis and you can walk into an office and speak to someone!

NFU is a mixed bag for sure. I had years of great service but the price was astronomical. Agree with slider, being able to talk to people at a local office is nice.

Premiums with most / all companies will go up at renewal. They count on it. Trick is to shop around each year and be willing to leave. A pain but there you are. New customers always get better deals. I’m with direct line and they insure items up to £4000 or so too and don’t need to specify.

I'm with nfu. Only reason I have stayed with them is that they do a better deal for kids driving insurance if we have our other policies with them as well. Given the eye-watering cost of insuring a young driver these days it has been worthwhile.
One irritating thing about the nfu insurance is that when I have added an extra item the premium goes up, but if I remove an item the premium doesn't go down!

Absolutely right, the business model of most insurance companies is built on new business and they heavily discount to get that on the books, then look to claw that back with rises in the following years. Being a rate tart is the way to counter this.

That said my vehicles are with NFU. I compare then every year and I haven't had cause to move.

Be careful to compare like for like as the headline premium in comparison sites can be deceptive.

I'm with Aviva, unspecified items up to £2k but I have my Blaser as a single item.
The only thing that annoyed me, I took out this insurance over a year ago, renewal time it went up 25% but they wouldn't budge, I checked around and they were still the best cover and the cheapest, I guess I had a big discount when I joined them.
As a comparison I was with Direct Line, Aviva are £150 cheaper
Cheers

NFU is definitely a lottery when it comes to what sort of person you will encounter and I hear many stories of excellent service from NFU but my experience with them was very poor, so poor in fact that I vowed never to bother with them again. I found the person in charge of the branch I dealt with very ignorant and she seemed more interested in chatting to her friends than looking after a customer. Every other insurance company I have dealt with has given me a much better experience.

I totally get that mate and I know a lot of folk really rate them , for me it was just cobblers they told me I knew it wasn’t true so went elsewhere , like you say a mixed bag with them but they do have a lot of folk recommend them

I am with NFU for everything - cars, house structure and contents and farm buildings and equipment - we too have checked others and been given discounts.
Given the views expressed above, next renewal I will look very carefully at what is on offer - I don't trust comparison sites at all, so it will be by phone. NFU dont insure febces against wind damage either so they are on a slippery slope with me now.

I am with DR and have option for specific specified items. Have top range so includes travel insurance and alike.

Always haggle on renewall.

Just take a separate policy also for firearms, gunplan for example. Cover for fire, theft, loss, damage.. at home or out in use.
