Full choke.

After shooting my 425 for the last 5 years on 1/2 and 3/4 choke I finally took the plunge to try full and full (partly because I found some on the cheap!). It was pigeon decoys today and due to the high winds and the slightly miss placed flight line the birds were all between 40-60yards. I was very pleasantly surprised on the results. There were just a couple of close birds which were admittedly well hit but not noticeably tricker than normal. In general the longer birds were either humanly hit or missed. There was one lung shot bird that made it to a tree but was dead by the time I'd got to it. This was a noticeable improvement on killing power from my standard 1/2 and 3/4. Full and full will definitely be my go too set up from now on as the mid to longer shots clearly had a lovely pattern and the closer shots were still very manageable.

I bought a Husqvarna 1310 SxS earlier this year that is choked full and fuller. Made in 1959 and feels as tight as when new, down to the fact that it was probably left in the safe due to being a hard one to shoot. When people ask what it is and I tell them, they pretty much always comment that it can be opened out if I need to.
I have had some good days with it, shooting crows and pigeons at good range, even taken a couple of rabbits at distance I would normally have used a .22 for. Fun to shoot, but I definitely need a lot more practice with it to be consistent enough to use it on a game day for those higher birds.

The choke size won't make any difference to the killing power as the FPS is the same value in all chokes.
I use a cyl/quarter with a fiber wad ounce load with a plan to take the back bird first and the close bird second.
With this wind of late ( which is most welcome) any twitch of the pigeons wing has them back in the next county in a milli second.

The tight pattern at distance is adding more pellets in a smaler area as what it is designed to do, glad to see other reports of pigeon shooting.

I found it best to pattern plate mine! it was really interesting at 50 yards I found the full choke with sipe extreme 32grm 5’s it had big holes in the pattern!!! so I decided on patterning the 3/4 choke and it was good so I use that in both barrels and it patterns great it’s a nice even spread.bearing in mind both my brownings are 1973+76 in year so they are tight in the bore anyway and they say until you drop down to half choke or under in this age of gun you will not notice a mass difference in the chokes?i don’t know much about how the modern back bored shotguns will pattern I just know they are supposed to be less punchy ant 50-60 yards with felt wads as you’ve lost some of the gas behind the wad.

True from a velocity point of view, but as said tighter patterns at distance certainly stop them better. Definitely give me more performance from a 32

Hi, I've not patterned the fulls yet but have with my other chokes and was certainly most impressed with the 3/4s I think they're pretty good hunting chokes tbf. I guess it's horses for courses as different cartridges can vary quite a lot throughout the same gun. I've always been wary of fibre but after accidentally buying a slab that what I was using. I couldn't personally notice any difference and they certainly stretched out OK. I imagine for elite shots pushing past the 60yd barrier it will make a difference but I don't think I'd notice much. It would be good to see the biodegradable 'plastic style' wads taking off.

I do have some Caledonia biodegradable 34grm 5’s that I use snd they are a really good cartridge as you would expect as they are just eley anyway but kept the original name!tgey are 65mm long instead of the usual 67mm but I like them and they hit hard at distance that’s for sure

That's good to hear. As much as I like plastic wads it's time they were phased out with something biodegradable.
