Shot by a friend a three legged hybrid, it had corkscrew antlers and there was damge to the testicles.

Sika dont throw malformed heads that often, so here are a couple that I have through my hands in recent years

True !
Sika are normally very regular.
Below are two which I shot in Co.Wicklow, Eire some years ago on the same trip over. Both have abnormal growths at the junction of the brow tines and main beam. [Both of these beasts were shot many miles apart on different areas but had very similar extras.]
The old man on the left made a Silver medal and had an unusual top left front tine with a fork on the end, it is a pity that his right rear inner tine was broken.

A very interesting thread this, thank you. Their antler range is certainly something that helps makes roe so fascinating.

I wonder what people's views are on something that has long puzzled me. A friend had a piece of ground that threw an amazing amount of roe malfoms, much higher than normal levels; his dining room has the trophies all on all four walls. They vary but many are corkscrew or a single beam that L shapes. Could this be genetic?

I had asked all the usual testicle damgage questions (fences, dogs, shotguns) and all were a negative.

With static species such as Roe genetic faults can easily be transmitted from one generation to another.
With nomadic species this is less likely to happen.

Another Wicklow Sika, just missed a Bronze medal because of the missing top rear tine.
It also exhibits another curious feature, the rare `bent-nose syndrome.`

Here is a quirky malformed Sika Stag on the hoof. A nice mature animal that was holding about a dozen hinds. Not sure but I think that his head was due to a damaged pedicle, which probably means that he will throw a wierd head from now on?

`wicklow 202`.
Sorry but no.
Liam McG. was with me when I shot it and wanted to drag it a mile back to the motor in one piece but it was so heavy that I had difficulty turning it over for the gralloching.
We cut it and he carried out the haunches and I took the head and both rifles.
The haunches weighed in excess of 100 pounds so it was a whopper.
I went back the next day to fillet the rest of it but had great difficulty finding it and if it had not been for a couple of Grey Crows sitting up a nearby tree I may not have found it.
The 5.6X61 Vom Hofe Super Express bullet had totally wrecked the front end but it was not totally wasted.

Here is a nice quirky malformed 8 pointer that I shot last year on a new permission. This was my first mature roebuck on this new piece of ground

Hi Lakey,

That is a very interesting head. Do you have a picture from the other side?
