(but not to purchase or aquire)... is there any way around this? I’ve had a shotgun on hold at RFD since November

A s7 isn't really meant to cover your FEO's backside if he/she hasn't processed your renewal or application in good time. What it was intended for was to legally permit an executor or person with power of attorney or other similar to legally possess firearms in order (usually) to dispose of them. That it has been now usurped as a vehicle to cover said FEO's backside is by the by. By the last changes to the Firearms Act. So the "way around" is to ask when was they application grant or renew your FAC or SGC made and why hasn't it been sorted. So I'm unsure as to why you have been given a s7.

Clearly you need to apply for a shotgun certificate if you want to get your gun from the rfd. A section 7 is just a temporary measure to get someone out of an awkward situation.
(For example, my wife got a sec 7 recently to enable her to transport my daughter's rifle home for storage after dropping off my daughter (FAC holder) back at college at the end of a work experience placement).

Both my shotgun cert and firearm cert have been in for renewal since October and they expired in December, I was sent a letter giving me an 8 week extension and now they’ve sent me a permit to possess valid until 13/05/2020 but I can’t use it to buy ammo or get my shotgun from the rfd.
tried to phone them this morning but they don’t pick up.

You don't need a SGC to hold shotgun ammo, a friend can buy a slab for you who has a sgc.

they did the same with mine si took ages ,got it sorted by phoning ngo and told them so and it magically appeared the day after. I,m dreading doing it again in 18 months, atb doug.
