Stutzen Rifles

Here's the Steyr's little brother, a CZ452 in .22LR.

Get yourself a proper mannlicher stutzen - the old one with the bolt handle half way down the action. They did make them in 243, 270 etc as well 6.5 Mannlicher.

Agreed - sort of. I really like them, but I personally prefer the longer barreled standard rifles, mainly as I 6 foot and long armed. I find most Stutzens just too short for me.

Decided I need something to look forward to once all this Covid19 business dies down and I get some time away from work in Accident and Emergency.

Got a hankering for a Stutzen rifle in .243win. I'm interested in what you folks think?

Just planning to use it for stalking, dont want a moderator on it, and I already have a 270win for if I am ever lucky enough to get a chance to stalk Reds/Sika in Scotland.

A mate of mine has a BSA Stutzen in .243 he's no longer using, so it's available.

one from the bargain basement end of the market.......

I have always wanted one since BSA made the airsporter stutzen in my formative years, but could never afford one. I got a slot for .308 a couple of years ago and looked around. Ended up calling in at a shop in the borders who had one upstairs, which had come In from a retired ranger but no one wanted so it was hidden away.

£125 for my ‘starter stutzen’ . I figured I would decide whether I really want one and then buy a better one anon. 3 yrs on I still have it. It’s old, slightly worn but the bolt closes with a noise like an old safe or the doors on a Saab 900. Reassuring.
it is a Mauser actioned zastava - no frills but still a nice rifle.but like mrs bouquet, I probably call it a Mauser and omit the zastava part.

it is light, so great to carry, but a lot of muzzle blast and I never see the shot hit like I do with the 243. Have taken several red and roe with it and For an old un the 1 1/2-2” group at 100yd is fine. But it might group better with a cross har scope rather than running boar type reticle. It took some sorting out to stop wildly wandering poi which was cured by a few business cards under the barrel ( it doesn’t have a metal end cap like some) thanks to kelnchbaize I think, for that.

most Of my stalking now is over clear fell so at longer ranges so I mostly use the 243 but I love having this one in the cabinet and for large, lowland reds at closer ranges it is ideal.
